Nick Vincent said: “Our guest speaker on Wednesday was Philippa Wrightson who gave a very informed talk on macular degeneration and the role of the Macular Society.

“Unfortunately, many of us are of the age where we have been affected or know people affected by this life changing condition – it is the biggest cause of sight deterioration in the UK affecting over 600,000 people with 75,000 new cases per year; ladies are slightly more at risk than gentlemen and older people are more susceptible. “

There are two types of degeneration and Philippa outlined the key differences between dry (evolves slowly) and wet (happens quickly but can be arrested by injections).

It is possible to have degeneration of either type in different eyes and for dry to change into wet – it is imperative to visit an optician on a regular basis to diagnose at the earliest opportunity.

Forty-nine club members and partners also enjoyed an afternoon on the Bluebell Railway which included a cream tea during the journey.

The day was free format with members joining friends for lunch, at Sheffield Park or elsewhere before the train and museum visit.

Nick added: “The club hosted its first ever barbecue with 37 members/partners attending a delightful evening at The Roundabout Hotel.

“It was an excellent informal gathering where neither the food nor spirits were dampened by the weather which turned a little stormy after dessert was served – many retreated to the restaurant at the earliest opportunity! Members are keen to repeat this event next year.

“An introductory croquet day was arranged by one of our members. A total of 18 people, mostly novices, arrived and with some instruction and gentle guidance, soon realised this was not just a game of knocking a ball through a hoop. A very enjoyable experience.

“We still have a very active programme left until the end of the year with an autumn lunch, a skittles evening and a Christmas dinner at the West Sussex Golf Club.”

Probus meets on the first Wednesday in the month and has a very varied programme of talks, activities and social events.
