West Meads residents to meet over housing fight

A meeting of West Meads residents will take place this weekend to consider fighting the housing plans.

The session at 10am on Saturday at West Meads Community Hall is being held by the estate's residents' association.

It comes after Aldwick Parish Council last week issued its strong condemnation of the intention to build 2,500 homes - half as many as the parish currently contains - behind West Meads.

Parish council clerk Sue Batey, writing on behalf of councillors, has told Arun District Council: "Placing 2,500 homes on this site will severely stretch the infrastructure of Aldwick, especially in the West Meads area, and will make it even more difficult than at present for residents from the whole parish to travel to work, hospitals etc in Chichester, Portsmouth and beyond.

"There will be many more vehicle movements on Chalcraft Lane - one of only two road links from Aldwick to the A259.

"It also seems irrational to be considering any further options in the Bognor Regis area at all, until the timing of the delivery of the Bognor Regis relief road is assured.

"Without this road, the proposed additional homes will simply grid-lock the whole area.

"The council is disappointed at the lack of ambition shown by the district council towards attracting employers of highly skilled workers to the area.

"Regeneration must be led by employment. Regeneration does not begin with additional houses.

"It begins with an improved environment for business - better and less congested roads, easy and low cost parking and good rail links."
