West Parade to reopen following seafront works

THE West Parade promenade will reopen to members of the public this weekend.

This follows a period of closure for work to be undertaken as part of Rother District Council’s controversial Next Wave scheme.

Already the project is beginning to take shape and members of the public can view the garden rooms, additional seating and signage.

However, the council is asking members of the public to be aware that West Parade still requires some finishing touches as the exceptionally cold weather has hampered workers’ efforts over the past few weeks.

Temporary fencing has also been put up around the gardens and lawns to give them an opportunity to establish over the winter months. Some additional resurfacing will also be required and snagging issues need to be addressed.

Contractors will be back on site in the New Year to complete any outstanding issues.

Meanwhile, work continues on the second part of the project near the De La Warr Pavilion to redevelop the Colonnade, build a new rowing club and create a community open space on the Metropole Lawns.

Project sponsor Cllr Christopher Starnes said: “It is good news that we are able to open the promenade in time for Christmas.

“Things are already looking good and even at this stage people can see the improvements that are being made.

“We do ask members of the public to remember there is still some work to be done, even though they can now walk on the promenade again. However, what has been done so far gives a fantastic glimpse of how we are making the most of Bexhill’s seafront.”

Cllr Starnes added: “The project remains on course for its summer 2011 completion date.”
