West Sussex cheerleaders are champions

THIRTEEN was a lucky number for the Sussex Tornados cheerleaders, who returned from the Southern Area Cheerleading Championships in Brighton with a baker's dozen haul of trophies.

The Tornados took 118 cheerleaders aged between five and 27, who competed in 13 divisions and came home with nine first places, three seconds and one third.

The successes were a fitting reward for the Tornados' hard work training over the last couple of months for the competition, which proved worthwhile as every age group pulled off perfect routines.

Head coaches Lianne Weston and Helen Coe thanked each cheerleader for their dedication, and particularly thanked Ben Barnard, Carley Johnson, Kelly Boiling and Alison Burns for giving up their own time to help coach the young people.

Said Lianne: "The Sussex Tornados have grown so much over the 12 years they have been running and this would not have been possible without Lil and Pete Weston and Phil Jeffery, who are the hub of it all and organise everything.

Some Tornados members will be representing the group and the UK when they travel to DisneyWorld Florida in March to compete at the Americheer Cheerleading Championships, a trip made possible by the Tornados' fund-raising team and a 2,000 grant from the Co-op.
