West Sussex firefighters encourage recycling

WEST Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging people to recycle their unwanted clothing to help raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Teaming up with recycling partner LMB, the fire service is placing The Fire Fighter Charity’s bright yellow recycling clothing banks across a number of its fire stations.

Crews are urging residents to support the scheme by recycling their unwanted clothing, linen, handbags and shoes to help protect the environment and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

The Fire Fighters Charity is the only official organisation that supports injured firefighters and their families in their time of need.

The recycling banks are also being used to raise awareness of the service’s home fire safety checks with the freephone number advertised on each one.

Head of protection for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Andy Tonks, said: “We hope by locating the banks outside our fire stations it will encourage residents, when they are having a bit of a clear out, to think about supporting firefighters by recycling their unwanted clothes as well, of course, as doing their bit for the environment.

“It’s a also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of the free home fire safety check service we offer so we can continue to help make our local communities safer.”
