West Sussex rail and road delays explained amid level crossing fault; A259 tailbacks reported

Drivers reported being stuck for more than half an hour after a fault with a level crossing in West Sussex earlier today (Tuesday, July 2).

Southern Rail reported at 10.35am that an issue with a level crossing between Angmering and Goring-By-Sea meant that ‘trains are running at a reduced speed’.

"Delays to services of up to 10 minutes are expected, so please ensure to check http://nationalrail.co.uk before you travel,” a social media statement read.

As of 11am. response teams were on site to fix the level crossing, and trains were able to run normally as repairs take place.

However, motorists were reportedly still affected.

One of those held up wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Can you at least open Angmering’s barriers so the cars can move? The queues are horrendous and we’ve been sitting waiting for 30 minutes! We’re completely stuck as there’s no other route without going over the train line.

"That barrier could have been raised for a few minutes to ease congestion. The tailback went down the A259 in all directions.”

In response, Southern Rail said specialist engineers were on site and were ‘trying to rectify a problem’.

A spokesperson added: “We are aware of the situation and the relevant teams in control are communicating with teams on the ground to ensure this is resolved as quickly and as safely as possible. We do apologise for the inconvenience caused in the meantime whilst this is fixed.”
