He said as he approached Eastbourne at the start of the final week of his odyssey on two legs: "I'm looking forward to reaching the finish and seeing my friends and my four children.

"Some of them have been out to see me and a few people have walked with me.

"But I have been on my own for most of the time. I would describe it as being alone but not lonely."

Mr Snook's arrival at the bandstand to be greeted by a welcoming party will be immediately followed by a civic reception at the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

This has been arranged by the Climb charity for which he has raised just over 20,200 so far. Four representatives from Climb will be joined by Bognor's town mayor, Cllr Jennifer Gillibrand, and MP Nick Gibb among the wellwishers. More than a hundred guests have been invited.

From there, Mr Snook will go to a friend's house in Bognor for a good night's rest. He will then walk up to Chichester for a reception at the Cross at 2pm on Saturday, December 13.

A night's stay there will see him walk to Aldingbourne sports ground, which is next to his home, on Sunday, December 14 to be greeted by his neighbours for his homecoming and his first night in his own bed since last December 31.

It was on new year's day that Mr Snook (72) set off with some 4,000 miles ahead of him. He is about to conquer them all in 347 days.

He has seen every type of coastline from the wilds of Scotland to the urban environment of a major city like London.

He said: "I am proud of my efforts. My legs are very tired at the end of each day but I have nine hours' sleep and they are ready to go again.

"I've had no problems with them and I've never had a cold during my walk. I've had a day off every fortnight but I've walked apart from that."
