Westfield Horticultural Society: Members of the horticultural Society will testify that the Autumn Show was one of the best yet, especially the dahlia auction! Now it becomes serious. The AGM of the Society will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at 7pm in The Community Centre, Workhouse lane, Westfield. Put this date in your diary now. Further details will follow. Do not forget the Great Pumpkin weigh in which will be held at The Plough Public House on Saturday,24th October. This will be interesting to see how everybody has fared!

Happy Birthday and congratulations: to the ‘Westfield Wildlife’ website. It has been four years this month since organisers Dave and Ralph started this, and in that time it has had 32,024 views on 392 posts, with the best ever being 274 views on the Long-tailed Blue butterfly seen in a garden in Pett on 10/8/2013. The Friendship Club: Future dates are October 12 and 26, November 9 and 23 and December 7 (Christmas party). New members are made most welcome. Meetings are 2-3.30pm in the Parish Hall, and members enjoy dominoes, Scrabble, whist, bingo, and a chat over tea and biscuits. The yearly subscription is £5, plus 10p each meeting. The WCA: is holding another Tea Party for older residents. If you are over 60 years and a resident of Westfield, the WCA invites you to a tea party on Saturday, October 17 at Westfield Community Hall from 3 – 4.30pm. Rye Lions May Save Men’s Lives: Rye & District Lions Club have arranged with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) to provide a free PSA blood test for men from Rye and nearby villages to assess their risk of any prostate problem, including prostate cancer.

One in every two men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, benign enlargement or cancer. One in every eight men will develop prostate cancer and those with a family history of the disease are up to three times more at risk. Around 42,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and it is now the leading cancer found in men and almost 11,000 men die of this disease annually. If caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. Some of the symptoms of prostate problems are a frequent need to urinate, especially at night; bursting to urinate; slow, difficult or painful flow; stop/start and dribbling; or blood in the urine. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate. It is not a direct test for cancer, but a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem and an even higher reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Free PSA testing is offered in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex by the charity PCaSO. who tested over 1600 men in 2014. In partnership with Rye & District Lions, they are now holding an all-day free test event in Rye for men aged between 45 and 75 at: Tilling Green Community Centre, Mason Road, Rye TN31 7BE on Saturday 10th October 2015 The testing will be conducted by trained personnel and nurses using the latest Mediwatch Bioscan equipment requiring only a finger prick, not a hypodermic needle, or “an armful” as Tony Hancock would say. The added advantage is a test result within 10 minutes. It is essential to book an appointment by ringing 01797 253899 between 9am and 6pm, or by email at [email protected] .
