Westfield Youth Club: runs a number of fun events. For more information contact Min Stratford on 07952 995743.

Westfield Horticultural Society: With Westfield Village fete and the trip to Wisley now in the past, activities continue. Members and others would have collected their free pumpkin seedlings from the Fete. I missed out, so I am imparting some secrets of growing a large pumpkin for the competition. Pumpkins are mainly made up of water and they, being members of the gourd family, are of a tropical nature. Therein lies the clue. They should be planted in a sunny place and also an area with abundant moisture. So if you haven’t done so, choose such a situation. They also like a fertile soil, so if no manure is at hand, a half handful of national Growmore incorporated in the soil should suffice for the time being. The immediate aim is to get the plant growing and as they are trailing plants they will need plenty of room. More tips will follow as the season progresses. The next trip is a self drive outing to Downderry Nursery, Hadlow, Near Tonbridge on Saturday, 25th July. This nursery, set in a walled garden, is home to the largest collection of Lavender and Rosemary species. Plants are propagated there. We will be having a tour of the nursery, an illustrated talk and a demonstration as to how Lavender oil is distilled. More details will follow in due course. In the meantime, don’t forget to find and like Westfield Horticultural Society on Facebook. All the activities are described in more detail.
