Wednesday Bible Study. We are following a series entitled The Coming King. Based on Mark’s Gospel, each week will follow-on from the series at NTS, providing an opportunity to dig deeper, ask questions and learn more. Everyone is welcome and if you have not been before, or not been for a while, now is a good time to give it a try. Wednesday 7.30 pm. We will be at Cathy and Howard’s home, Cockmartins, Westfield Lane.

Before you buy your Christmas Cards – there is an alternative for all those who wish to send cards to their friends at St John’s. Instead of sending individual cards why not send just one joint card to all your friends, which you can pin to a special board in the church porch, where they can read it and then why not make a donation to charity instead.

Friends of Westfield Parish Church. The Friends will hold their annual Christmas Fayre in the Parish Hall on Saturday 1st December from 2pm until 4pm. There will be the usual festive stalls and everyone is welcome. Entrance is 50p which includes Tea/Coffee and biscuits. Offers of help or items for the cake/preserves stall or raffle will be very welcome. Please contact Joan Downing or Ann Stocker for further information.

Christmas Choir. This year, Carol Services will be held at Guestling on 16th and Westfield on 23rd December, with a joint choir singing at both services. As usual, both choirs welcome ‘extras’ to join the choir for Christmas, even if you are able to come to only one of the services. The Westfield Christmas practices will be on Thursdays at 7.30pm from 15 November (but not 22 November) until a joint practice at Guestling on 13th. Please let Janice know if you will be coming. Guestling Choir practice is every Thursday at 7.00pm – all welcome.

Rye and District Lions Club (including Westfield & all local villages) celebrated their 36th Anniversary with a Charter Lunch for over eighty Lions and guests at the Brickwall Hotel, Sedlescombe. Guests attending included past Rye Mayor John Breeds, the Lions South East District Governor, Phil Robinson, District Secretary Jackie Robinson and President of Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club, Roger Evans, and many Lions from all neighbouring clubs were also present. Rye Lions President, Malcolm McDonough thanked Rye Lions for another record year of fund-raising in which they have donated over £15,000 to many charities and good causes, many local, but also to national and international appeals. These included St. Michael’s Hospice, the Hospice in the Weald, Macmillan Cancer Support, Rye Community Transport, the Air Ambulance, the Lions Blood Research Campaign and the Lions Measles Appeal amongst many others. He said that this was only possible due to the help the Lions received from their Lions’ Friends and from their partners – the latter often thinking up more ways for the Lions to raise money. He was also pleased to announce that their membership had increased over the last year up to twenty members and in addition there were some potential members in the wings. Lions South East District Governor, Phil Robinson, congratulated Rye Lions on another successful year and then awarded District Governor’s Certificates of Appreciation to Colin Sayell, for his lead in fund-raising. This Certificate was also for Colin’s wife, Pam, who, whilst not a Lion, was always at his side throughout their fund-raising initiatives and who had only recently passed away and would be greatly missed by the Lions. Certificates were also presented to Martin Carree as Welfare Officer and a Lion for over 30 years and to Reg Emson, Treasurer for many years. Reg is commonly referred to in Rye Lions as “Fagin” for his ability to seem to make money last despite writing many cheques for different charities. The District Governor then presented Rye Lions President with his personal banner. The Lions will be continuing to raise funds for worthy causes over the next few months. They will be collecting at Jempsons, Peasmarsh and Jempsons Budgens at Rye and Hawkhurst just before Christmas. They will also be participating in Rye’s Christmas Festival. They are holding their Burns Night Brass Band Concert at Beckley Village Centre, this year actually on Burns Night, the 25th January.

The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club of the East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) is looking for new members. ESDA is a charity organisation led by disabled people and provides expert advice, information and practical support. ESDA has dedicated accessible coaches with fully qualified driver attendants providing a door to door service for members. The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club have outings on the second Thursday of the month. Members participate in fundraising to keep the costs down, so there is simply a contribution requested towards the transport. If you fancy getting out and about, making new friends or if you would like to volunteer to help, please give Marianne a call at ESDA on 01323 514531 or email [email protected]. Visit www.esda.org.uk for more information.
