Family Support Work. Today is the fourth Sunday of the month. At both churches, St John’s and St Laurence, we have the opportunity to donate gifts of non-perishable food, to be used by the diocesan Family Support Work Outreach Team in Hollington.

*Wednesday Bible Study. We are following a series entitled The Coming King. Based on Mark’s Gospel, each week will follow-on from the series at NTS, providing an opportunity to dig deeper, ask questions and learn more. Everyone is welcome and if you have not been before, or not been for a while, now is a good time to give it a try. Wednesday 7.30 pm at Cathy and Howard’s home, Cockmartins Farm.

Westfield Scout Group is holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 6 October at 2pm in Westfield Community Hall, with lots of bargains for everyone. We would be grateful for any donations of jumble, which can be left at the Hall from 12.15pm. We regret we cannot accept TVs, monitors or items larger than a chair.

The Boys of Canterbury Cathedral Choir, under their Director of Music, Dr David Flood, will be taking part in a concert at St Andrew’s Church, Fairlight on Saturday 22nd September 2012 starting at 7.00pm. HYE are members of various church fellowships who take it in turn to host a monthly joint youth service for young people in the Hastings/St Leonards area. Our aim is to provide opportunity for our young people to meet together and be encouraged to grow in their faith, through creative worship, prayer and teaching. It’s a great way to meet with other young people from churches around the town and encourage each other as Christians in an atmosphere of fun and worship and of course, food! All youth, from secondary school upwards are welcome. Please note that young people should be accompanied by an adult leader from their group / church and not just dropped off. Prayer Team. For those who want someone to personally pray with them in times of particular need, there is an opportunity this week after the 9.30 am service at St John’s where a member of the Prayer Team will be in the North Aisle to pray with you.

Stagecoach has apparently still not produced timetables on the following changes to Westfield bus times. To improve punctuality and reliability, from Monday 10th July most bus times through Westfield have been altered by a few minutes, and during the middle of the day buses follow a different route into Hastings. At the time of producing this article, no printed timetables were available.

From Westfield: - Hastings buses leave 5 minutes EARLIER at 10 past the hour, except the previous 0915 which now leaves at 0902. - Buses leaving between 1010 and 1510 inclusive will OMIT Sainsbury’s altogether and go straight to the Conquest Hospital. They then continue via Silverhill and Bohemia Road to Hastings Station. These services are renumbered 341 from Tenterden or 343 from Rye. - The remaining 340 and 342 services keep to the previous route to Hastings but will not enter Sainsbury’s car park, stopping only on the main road.

From Hastings: - Departure times are unchanged at 14 minutes past the hour except for the last 3 which are 2 minutes earlier at 1617, 1717 & 1817. The journey to Westfield will take about 5 minutes longer. - Buses leaving 1014 and 1314 inclusive will go via Bohemia Road as a 341 or 343 and will NOT serve the Queens Road stop. These and the 1414 which goes via Queens Road will OMIT Sainsbury’s altogether. - The remaining 340 and 342 services will not enter Sainsbury’s car park and will stop only on the main road.

Battle Area Community Transport . Just to confirm arrangements - passengers do not have to ring to book a seat for Sainsburys. They only have to ring if they want to book the flexi services on the back page going to Tunbridge Wells, Rye, Tenterden etc. Our normal bus services on Wednesday at 11:12 boarded just by waiting at the stop. There is a new street dance class in the community hall dining room 6pm till 8pm first lesson is free then £4 a session. Westfield wildlife is one year old this month! over the last 12 months we have had to date -9,181 views, from 49 countries worldwide, viewing 121 postings. our busiest day was on 12/5/2012 with 196 visitors to the site. many thanks go to all of our contributors and for all comments on postings. we hope you will continue to support westfield wildlife and submit any records of anything you see of interest.

The Westfield Parent and Toddler Group would like more families to join it. This runs on Friday afternoons from 7 September (term time only) from 1.15-3pm in the Parish Hall, apart from the 3rd Friday in the month when the Hall is used for the Community Lunch Club. The Health Visitor still runs alongside the Toddler Group on the 1st Friday of each month, even during school holidays. The Toy Library attends fortnightly.

The Jumble Sale – in aid of Cancer Research UK/Myeloma UK last Saturday raised £300. Many thanks to all who supported this annual event.

WESTFIELD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY AUTUMN SHOW 2012. Quality not quantity!

According to judges who have wide experience of village horticultural shows, this year has seen quite a drop in numbers of exhibitors and entries. Nevertheless, while this trend was reflected at the Westfield Autumn show last Saturday, visitors to the Community Hall were rewarded with a fine selection of flowers, fruit and vegetables, along with some superb floral art exhibits and traditional craft and home produce displays. Recent weeks of benign weather have largely compensated for the cool and wet apology for a summer. The Sussex Bee-keepers were less fortunate. The disastrous weather almost wiped out local honey production and they staged a demonstration of this craft instead.

Westfield Golf Fellowship’s last competition was the sell out at Chartham Park last Thursday. The winner with 42 points was Carl Read & the runner up Tim Cheal with 40 points. The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club of the East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) is looking for new members. ESDA is a charity organisation led by disabled people and provides expert advice, information and practical support. ESDA has dedicated accessible coaches with fully qualified driver attendants providing a door to door service for members. The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club have outings on the second Thursday of the month. Members participate in fundraising to keep the costs down, so there is simply a contribution requested towards the transport. Westfield Hub. The Hub would welcome any donations of cakes or other items, such as biscuits, jams, chutneys etc. for sale at the Macmillan Coffee morning to be held on Friday 28th September, 10 - 12 noon at The Plough. Please bring them along the week before, or perishables early on that morning. All proceeds from this event are donated to Macmillan.

The Westfield Hub meets every Friday morning from 10 - 12 noon at The Plough. Everyone is welcome for coffee and a chat, book exchange or the use of a computer.

Horse Racing Club. There has been talk of a racing club being formed in the village. This includes regular competitions & occasional trips to the races. The Rye and District Lions Aid Orphanages Yet Again

For the thirteenth year, the Lions Clubs in the Southeast have sent vital necessities to orphanages and families in need in Belarus. Rye and District Lions have assisted Judy Pope, wife of Rye Lions Stuart Pope, who has collected most of the items, by transporting the boxes of donated goods from Rye to Queenborough. All of these will be distributed to orphanages, schools, kindergartens and needy families in the Gomel area of Belarus where they are still affected by the accident at Chernobyl power station in neighbouring Ukraine over 26 years ago. Judy has been collecting these boxes of items for seven years now and was rather disappointed that she did not fill as many as last year. However, the 76 boxes she has filled this year were much larger packing cases than last year, so the total amount is probably similar. Rather peculiarly the boxes, filled by Lions clubs in the Southeast are called “shoeboxes”, but in practice the boxes are usually considerably much larger. The complete load leaving the UK this year consists of 950 boxes and other items on the main load and another 102 pallets in the second lorry, with a total weight of 12 tonnes and an estimated second-hand value of some £15,000. There is as usual great variation in what is sent, from toilet paper to stationery, furniture to bicycles and underwear to winter clothing. Some of the children’s winter clothing is desperately needed, with children having to share coats to take turns to go outside in the Winter. Lions Clubs, including Rye, also contribute to the transport costs of getting the lorries to Belarus, which is a considerable amount.Rye Lions are grateful to Bournes for allowing the boxes to be stored in their warehouse at Rye Harbour and to John Roberts and Sons of Iden for the loan of a large van to transport the boxes from Rye to Queenborough. The lorries will be leaving the UK in the next week for Belarus, escorted by Lions to try and ease their passage through several border controls and customs. Judy has already started on next year’s consignment and has already filled several boxes. If anyone wishes to donate unwanted items in reasonable condition, they should contact Judy on 01791 230380.
