Wet weather doesn’t dampen spirits at hopping festival

THE summer weather may have abandoned this corner of England, but the rain didn’t deter the hardy souls attending the Kent and East Sussex Railway’s annual Hop Pickers Weekend from enjoying a weekend of hopping nostalgia.

Each summer hop pickers used to arrive in specially timetabled trains from London and this year marks 55 years since the last Hop Pickers Special arrived at Bodiam station.

Bodiam was an important area for hop picking and the weekend re-lives the days when Londoners came hopping for a summer break.

There was plenty of entertainment for visitors to enjoy on the day, including some country dancing, courtesy of the girls from King Offa School in Bexhill, as well as a turn by the popular Kits Coty Morris Dancers.
