Wey and Arun Canal Trust presentation at Petworth House

THERE was a special presentation at Petworth House and a celebration with Lord and Lady Egremont for the 3,000th member of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust.

Roy Tanner and his wife Caroline (the 3,001th member to join the trust) were presented with a certificate to mark the milestone recruitment figure.

Mr Tanner retired after a career as a BT engineer and become a canals enthusiast.

He and Mrs Tanner signed up with the trust after enjoying towpath and countryside walks and excursions on the organisation’s boats along the fully restored section at Loxwood.

“We visited in March hoping to go on another trip,” said Mrs Tanner.

“The boats were not yet running so we went to see what was in the canal centre, where we realised what good work was being done.”

The trust began its project to restore the Wey and Arun Canal in the 1970s. The aim is to reopen a 23 mile stretch from Pallingahm in West Sussex to Shalford near Guildford.

Trust president Lord Egremont is the great-great-great grandson of the 3rd Earl of Egremont, the first chairman of the Wey & Arun Junction Canal Company, the northern part of the waterway which opened in 1816.

Two hundred years on, the trust aims to reopen its first restored Surrey section next year.
