What Rye’s new school will offer

RYE’S new Studio School is ready to take on applications from students across Sussex and Kent ahead of when it opens next year.

The new school, which will offer vocational skills and on site training in the arts and entertainment, alongside academic qualifications, was given approval by the Government.

It is the first school of its kind in the south of England.

It will also mean that post 16 education will be available again in Rye for the first time in more than a decade.

Applications open at the end of November for the Rye Studio School and its sponsor, Rye College, is holding a number of open evenings and moving-on events to discuss students’ options at the new Studio School .

Prospective students will be able to come along to a special evening event to be held at Rye College on November 29th, for students wanting to find out more about enrollment.

Rye Studio School Project Manager Rebekah Gilbert said: “We have been out and about over East Sussex and Kent for the past five weeks promoting its opening in September 2013 and consulting with residents.

“Taking a novel approach, we have linked up with our vocational education partners, Entertainment Workshops, to advertise the school.

“David ‘Del Boy’ Byrne, owner of Entertainment workshops based in Rye Harbour, was out in Ashford and Hastings town centres with the message of ‘Get your GCSEs here’ to passers by, many of whom stopped to do a double take at the Only Fools and Horses sketch.

Rye MP Amber Rudd said: “I’m delighted to support Rye Studio School. It is going to offer a fantastic new opportunity for young people in our area; bring it on!”

Studio Schools are a new type of state school model that has been developed in partnership with local and national employers, leading education agencies and government.

They have been designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in life and work.

Studio Schools are an important new option for young people of all abilities. They are a new approach to learning involving enterprise projects and paid work experience.

They offer a real alternative to traditional learning and are making a real difference to the lives of young people up and down the country.

The Rye school already has the backing of many local businesses and organisations in the Rye area.
