Whatever you need to know about fire safety - ask a Brownie

BROWNIES from the 3rd Rustington troop have gained their fire safety badge with help from the experts at East Preston Fire Station.

The Brownies were the first in the county to earn the badge on a new course launched by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, aimed at increasing fire safety awareness.

Firefighters from East Preston showed the Brownies how to prevent fires, the importance of having a smoke alarm and what to do when phoning the emergency services.

Darren Seymour from East Preston Fire Station said the new style syllabus mixed fun and learning together and that both the Brownies and the firefighters enjoyed themselves.

"It was very rewarding for us to see the effort and enthusiasm that the Brownies put in to learn some simple steps that one day may save someone's life," he said. "They made it fun for us and they fully deserve their fire safety badge."

East Preston Fire Commander John Mays said: "We are extremely keen as a station to see youth groups getting involved with this type of course.

"I would like to praise the efforts of all the Brownies involved for an excellent result.

"Any other youth groups from East Preston that wish to fire safety sessions should contact us at the station."
