Going to the cinema this weekend? Prepare to shell out around a tenner for a ticket, not forgetting the price of the petrol to get there, the bucket of popcorn and the gallon of cola. It’s enough to make the hinges on Iron Man’s wallet creak a little in protest. Instead why not join the Whatlington Film Club where, for just £7.50 a year, you can catch up on classic movies and the best films of the past 12 months. Held at the friendly Royal Oak pub, you can watch your movies in the barn function room with a glass of wine or pint at your elbow and a bowl of chips in your hand. If that surround-sounds like a good deal just turn up to any of the next monthly screenings and, if you enjoy the experience, you can sign up afterwards. The next movie is today (Friday, 2 August) when the charming, funny and poignant Silver Linings Playbook will be screened from 8pm. It stars Jennifer Lawrence whose ex-husband returns from a mental health institution to which a court had ordered him for beating up her lover. His doting mum agrees for him to live back at home, to the surprise of dad Robert de Niro. But Pat Solano Jr declines to take his medication and instead pursues his goals of getting a job and winning back his wife by looking for the silver linings in his life. The following two screenings on the first Friday of the month will be the latest Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises (6 September) and the modern classic Amélie (October 4). If you want to find out more call Steve Turner on 01424 870041 or email [email protected].

A big thank you to Jo and Paul Dengate for organising yet another fabulous Irish Music night at The Royal Oak last Friday. It was an excellent evening as usual, the next one will fall on Friday 30th August.

We have a another wine tasting evening coming up at The Royal Oak on Saturday 10th August from 9pm, this time focusing on Spanish wine. Tickets are just £5 each to come and join us in tasting several excellent Spanish wines, both red, white and possibly a bit of Cava to round off the evening! If you would like to book your place, please call us on 01424 870492.

Our Summer Party and Boules competition is coming up - Bank Holiday Monday 26th August from midday. We’re starting earlier this year to avoid still playing boules late into the night like last year! The pairs boules competition is open to everyone, boules can be provided, no experience necessary and don’t forget you can come and practice in advance on the boules piste in the garden! We will be having a barbecue, so this is another opportunity to indulge in one of Mike’s lovely homemade burgers for just £5, so do come along and join us for a lovely day!

Eighteen members of The Good Companions enjoyed a delicious summer bring and share luncheon last week at the Village Hall. In fact I will go as far to say that it was one the best we have had. All the food eaten is home cooked and therefore the flavour and taste is so much better than shop food. We enjoyed a three course meal, accompanied by wine and home-made apple juice, followed by tea/coffee. Starters were melon or pate for by home cooked ham, local eggs and cheese, home-made assortment of quiches, salads, new potatoes and delicious home-made chutneys. Desserts were home-made fruit tart, jellies and trifle accompanied by ice cream and cream. Reading through this you can understand why these “bring and share” luncheons are such a success. Thank you to all those who attended and lovingly prepared the delicious food.

Our next outing is to Carr Taylor Vineyards on Wednesday August 28th. If you would like to attend this outing please let Hilda know immediately... thank you.

The Church Appeal fund has now risen to £37,749.60. We have had a terrific month in July with donations amounting to £1,365.10, £250.10 which was raised at the cream teas. Bearing in mind that the Appeal fund has been running for three years now ,I think that the amount donated in July is superb, magnificent. Thank you to all those who support us so generously. I think that the Appeal Fund will reach at least £40,000 before we close the account and this would be a sum of money that I would never have thought was achievable! I consider that the church is very fortunate to have such loyal supporters who have given so generously... thank you.
