The Royal Oak

A big thank you to Hazel for the excellent Australian wine tasting evening that was held last weekend at The Royal Oak and also to Ian Cheveralls for providing wine direct from his Grand daughter’s vineyard “Hidden Valley”. We had a super evening and it was interesting to compare some of the prices with a blind tasting at the end.

It’s Irish Music Night tonight (Fri 28th) at The Royal Oak when talented musicians gather from all around the South and East for a jamming-style session of traditional Irish tunes. There is no entry fee, so just come along if you would like to be a part of this unique evening of live music.

The next Film showing at The Royal Oak is next Friday 5th July when we will be looking at the award winning “Life of Pi” from 8pm in The Barn.

Wednesday at The Royal Oak is games night, when we play cribbage, shove ha’penny, darts and dominoes, and now we are offering curry and a pint for just £7 on Wednesday evenings too!

Every Thursday is still Quiz night at The Royal Oak and it is always a very busy evening, so if you have a team of up to six players and would like to take part it’s worth calling on 01424 870492 to book a table as we tend to get full! The usual menu is available 6.30pm - 9pm, and entry to the quiz is just £1 per person.

The next Jumble Sale at The Village Hall is on Saturday 13th July at 10am, so if it’s time for a bit of a sort out and you have some donations, please drop them into the pub or call Angie on 01424 870087 for possible collection.

I am absolutely amazed by people’s generosity! This week I have been able to credit St. Mary Magdalene Church Appeal fund with the grand sum of £398.70 an amazing amount considering the Appeal fund has been running for nearly three years now. Thank you to all those who supported the Village Fete last week, some by making delicious cakes for the cake stall, others for donating to the refreshments ,those who “manned” the church’s stalls and finally to those who bought the “goodies”. The church was able to raise a magnificent £253.70 which was donated to the Appeal Fund. Yew sales totalled £46 and this amount was credited to the Fabric of the Church account. The church were also able to give a donation to The Village Hall of £30. Many thanks for donations received from three other people this week. The total monies received now amounts to £36,384.50 and so far £22,984.67 has been spent, leaving a balance of £13399.83.

Many thanks to all those who have donated so generously to this account over the three years. The toilet, kitchen, water and new heating are all installed at the church now and things are progressing well. We are now just waiting for our third faculty application, which includes the organ and the pews, to be approved. When this done we can then move ahead with the final phase of the restoration.

Church Services for July are 8.30am Parish Communion on June 7, 21 and 28 and on July 14, which is Sea Sunday there will be an all Age Worship service at 10.30am. Everyone is most welcome to join us.

The Good Companions are holding their next meeting on Wednesday July 3. This meeting will be held at Jacqueline’s where we will be enjoying cream teas... homemade scones and jam... I can smell the scones now and my mouth is watering. Let’s hope the weather improves so that we can enjoy Jacqueline’s large garden. l look forward to seeing everyone there!
