Friday 26th October is a staff training inset day and the school will be also be closed with back to school day being Monday 5th November.

Whatlington Film Club members will be putting their nerves to the test at a special Hallowe’en screening of The Woman in Black on Saturday (October 27).

The frightener, starring Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, tells the story of grieving widower Arthur Kipps given one last chance to save his law firm job with an assignment to a remote village to study the deeds of a house whose owner has recently died.

In Hammer House of Horror style the solicitor (Radcliffe) walks into the local pub to be given the silent treatment by the locals and told there is no room at the inn.

Despite being warned to leave the village, Arthur goes to the isolated manor to find it haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black. He discovers she was a mother whose son drowned and who now seeks revenge on the children of the village.

Shivers up and down the spine are guaranteed – nothing to do with the forecast plunging temperatures – and if you fancy a fright night you can join the club for just £7.50 which gives you entrance to at least 12 films over the next 12 months. About the same as a bucket of popcorn and a gallon of fizz at mainstream cinemas.

Call Steve Turner on 01424 870041 to find out more.

Roger enthralled members of The Good Companions with his talk on “The History and Art of Cartophilly”. I wonder how many of you know what this talk would have been about without looking it up? I “goggled” this but came up with the collecting of cigarette cards when in fact ,and this was confirmed by Roger, it is the collecting of picture cards, such as postcards. I am at the age when I can remember playing with cigarette cards (showing my age!), flicking them against the wall and winning all the cigarette cards if yours landed on one; such happy school day memories.

Roger showed us a collection of his cigarette cards and sets and talked about the history of collecting cigarette cards; it was so interesting. Thank you Roger for sharing your hobby with us and for making your talk so captivating.

Tea and cakes were enjoyed by all. I must thank the person who donated the bottle of cherry wine for the raffle. I won this and it was really delicious and more like a liquor.

Thank you to all those who contributed in all ways to make this an enjoyable afternoon.

I am at present arranging the Christmas Lunch. It will hopefully be on Wednesday 28th November. I will send out details shortly.

If you would like further details on The Good Companions please do telephone Hilda on 01424 777358.
