The parish council have been advised that East Sussex Highways will be undertaking carriageway resurfacing works on the B2089 Park Lane.

The duration of works will be 10th - 12th October. There will be a temporary road closure from its junction with the A.21 north to where is joins the B2089 Hooks Beech. A local diversion route will be signed and maintained for the duration of the works - A.21 Vinehall Street - B2089 Hooks Beech and vice versa. Whatlington parish barn dance will be on Saturday 22nd September on the field behind the village hall.Please refer to the “Whatlington News”for further details.

Message from Hilda Aplin. On Wednesday 19th September I have arranged for “The Good Companions”to visit to Lime Cross Nurseries, Herstmonceux. I had hoped that we would have someone to show us around the nursery, but no one is available that day so we will be free to wonder at leisure; perhaps buying some winter bulbs or flowers.We will enjoy afternoon tea in the newly refurbished restaurant, which will be tea/coffee and a slice of homemade cake or fruit scone with cream & jam .We will leave Oakhurst Road at 1.30pm and I have booked tea for 3.15pm. If you would like to attend please return the forms you have been given, to Valerie, by Saturday 15th September, ( Please do indicate your choice of cake or scone)

With the recent hot and rainy weather, the grass has shot up, the hedges are growing and a lot of people are asking how they can help. So, as well as carrying out an extra cut this season, the County Council is reminding people how they can get involved.Highways teams regularly trim the hedges that are on council land, but most hedges on the roadside belong to private landowners. Where highways staff are informed of a problem they will ask the landowner to cut them back. Please check your hedges regularly and make sure they are not blocking paths, obscuring road signs or making it difficult for motorists to see the road ahead.

Grass verges in rural parts of East Sussex will get an extra cut this season because there has been so much rain. The highways teams usually cut verges in urban areas five times a year and those in rural areas twice. But after the UK’s wettest June since records began, the county’s verges have grown at a rapid rate. We’re making good progress with the second cut and the third, extra, cut will start in mid-September. Each cut covers 2700km of grass verge and takes around 40 days to complete.

Back to school for the local primary school took place on Thursday 6th Sep and all pupils are now well into the second week of term and settling down for what will be a special year ahead for the new starters in reception and those in year 6 transferring to secondary school next year.

Well done and thank you to everyone who came and supported the Whatlington Big Quiz at The Royal Oak last week, we all had lots of fun and were challenged by Martin’s questions! Hopefully we’ll do it all over again next year to raise money for other Whatlington community events. If trivia is your thing (or you just want an excuse for a night out), don’t forget to join us every Thursday from 8pm for the weekly pub quiz at The Royal Oak!

Irish Music Night will be coming around again on Friday 28th September from 8.30pm - always a fantastic night so put the date in your diary if you fancy a unique and uplifting Friday night!

The next Royal Oak wine tasting evening will be on Saturday 29th September at 9pm. Hazel, our local wine enthusiast will guide us through a variety of red wines from around the World for just £5 a ticket. If you would like to come along, please let me know on 01424 870492.
