WHISPERING SMITH: Café rediscovered just a short walk from the sea

I am sitting here in the sunshine at the little café by the Norfolk Gardens tennis courts, the sunlight is reflecting off the table and if I look across the adventure golf park I can see a bright blue sky through the palm trees and almost hear Harry Belafonte singing.
The Putting Green Cafe? The Putting Green Cafe?
The Putting Green Cafe?

Okay, that may be a bit of a stretch but you get the point.

There has been a remarkable change to this little café close to Littlehampton’s pitch and putt course.

The plastic furniture is still there inside and it still looks a bit like a works canteen but that is already beginning to change with the addition of some delightful wood furniture, paintings on canvas and a whole fresh attitude to customers.

I suspect most of this has been brought about by the new manager, Ellen Sutton, whose partner is responsible for the woodwork and she for the friendly front-of-house atmosphere.

It is hoped that the café will become part of the local community with quiz nights and children’s parties as well as a display space for local artists and photographers.

A full English from 9am to 12.30pm with real snorkers, not your sawdust filled catering sausages used by many commercial outlets. Too late for breakfast? Then enjoy a lunchtime snack or a home-made cake served with fine Edgcumbes coffee.

Well-behaved dogs are welcomed, as are children and muddy golfers.

This Arun District Council facility operated by ISS – unfortunate initials – should have a name and a sign: The Putting Green Café would do nicely.

SATURDAY sees the first of this year’s Littlehampton Artisan Markets running from 10am to 4pm. The theme for this shindig will be all things Western, so put on your Stetsons and your cowboy boots and ‘hopalong’ to the High Street for some dancing and fine country music. Oh, if you see me there, do drop by, say hi and sit a spell, it would be nice to talk Westerns with you...
