'˜White powder spillage' prompts Hove road closure

Emergency services have sealed off Sackville Road after a spillage of white powder was reportedly causing breathing difficulties to members of the public.

Firefighters, paramedics and police were called to the scene at the junction of Sackville Road with Portland Road at 5.15pm this evening (March 7).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to reports of ‘white powder on the road’ and two fire engines attended.

Brighton and Hove Police said the white powder at the scene was thought to be dehydrated lime used for building, and it was being cleared from the road. The substance has been known to cause breathing difficulties.

The incident resulted in heavy traffic in Hove around rush hour.

Emergency services remain at the scene.
