Why Lee is running the London marathon

HE'S never run a marathon before, but 20-year-old Lee Smalley is more than ready for the challenge.

On Sunday week he will join the many thousands of brave souls from all over Britain attempting the 26.5 punishing miles across the capital that add up to the London Marathon.

"I am excited about it, and just can't wait", said Lee, of the Pelham Hotel in Sidley.

"I will definitely finish. I don't really care if I have to walk because it is all for charity.

"Perhaps I will get nervous when I get there because it is such challenge."

Training for the event was disrupted for a while by a football injury; his GP told him to rest but Lee didn't always pay attention - last week he ran over to Ore, then along the Ridge towards Battle and back to Bexhill.

"I just did it because I wanted to know if I could."

Lee is hoping to raise 800 for PSP, which stands for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative brain condition with no known cure.

He is running for the charity because he suffered a brain haemmorage four years ago, following an accident; "I can't remember anything about it," he says of the injury.

Born and raised in Southport, he moved to Bexhill with his family a year ago, when his father and stepmother took over the Pelham Hotel, where he now works.
