n Battle Mayor Cllr Richard Bye said: “This recognition would underline the relevance of the site in terms of its impact on English history.

“The reference in the bid to 1066 Country is a clear acknowledgement not only of this historical significance but also that, in its own right, the town of Battle has much to offer culturally through its mix of attractions, events, shops and restaurants.”

n 1066 Country Marketing said: “1066 Country has a superb programme of annual events and Battle plays an integral role in this.

“The bonfire and re-enactment are just a couple of the highlights which draw in visitors to events that they couldn’t experience elsewhere in England beyond Sussex.

“We have London-standard galleries such as the Saffron Gallery in Battle and Black Shed Gallery at Robertsbridge and are lucky to have the bi-annual shows put on by the Pure Arts group.

“These are just a few of the exciting cultural offerings which the residents of Battle have on the doorstep and make a valuable contribution to the UK City of Culture 2017 bid.”

n Dale Cromwell, chair of the Battle and District Chamber of Commerce, said: “To have Battle put forward as a candidate is great news and I can think of none better.

“I do not know of a town or city with as much diversity in the events we hold, and with these events bringing everyone out of the woodwork to take part in them, it goes to show we are a town full of tradition and that the cultural side of Battle does not stop with arrows and tapestries.”

n Jo Stewart, property manager at 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, said: “I think this bid is great news, it’s very positive for the area and anything that spreads the word about the richness and diversity of our heritage and culture is a great thing.”
