Wick building scheme ‘disaster’ as firm busts

RESIDENTS in Wick have been forced to pick up the pieces after a construction company charged with implementing a multi-million pound energy-saving scheme went into administration, leaving hundreds of people with unfinished homes.

The announcement was made on Friday (March 1) that Exeter-based Tru-Clad Ltd, which had been contracted by Arun District Council to install environmentally-friendly cladding on many of the houses and flats in Wick, had called in administrators following financial difficulties.

Three council-owed flats along Clun Road still remain unfinished, alongside 89 privately owned properties across the village.

On Friday, residents received a letter from Arun’s head of housing Brian Pople, which said the council was “committed” to ensuring a satisfactory solution was discovered for homeowners and council tenants.

However, residents have expressed their scepticism with the promise.

Bev Treble, of Highfields Cottages, has owned her home for 15 years. She said that her garden remains in tatters and that the leaking roof above her toilet – damaged by foreign workers employed by Tru-Clad – had still not been repaired.

The 65-year-old said: “The work was a shambles. It was rushed and wasn’t properly thought out. That’s why we are here now.”

Brian Pople said: “Following Tru-Clad, the company dealing with the property insulation and improvement work in Wick, going into administration, Arun District Council has been investigating options in order to get the outstanding works completed and is arranging for new contractors to be on site as soon as possible.

“The council is committed to ensuring the situation is brought to a satisfactory conclusion for both Council tenants and homeowners alike.”
