Wick man has no ‘Dredd’ over his home-made action flick

Oliver Hollingdale, of Courtwick Lane, has been recording a six-part e-series of Dredd: Cursed Edge and has already built a sizeable following in the comic book community – with more than 4,000 fans keenly tracking his efforts on Facebook.

And now, after almost a year of preparation work, Oliver, 23, is ready to air the first episode of his home-made action film.

“The idea came from the Dredd film in 2012,” he explained. “It failed at the box office because no one wanted to see it.

“A lot of the community saw the Sylvester Stallone film and thought it was awful so they didn’t bother to see this one.”

However, Oliver – a moving film graduate at the University of Brighton – said when the movie was released on DVD it became a cult hit.

He added: “Word of mouth soon got around saying it was a great film. So I thought it would be good to try and give them a new Dredd fix”

Oliver has been recorded the series on a shoestring budget, shooting much of it in Worthing, Shoreham and Brighton.

He had applied for a grant from funding group Kickstarter but said his bid was turned down. Since then he resorted to casting friends and contacts on Facebook.

“I’ve got two judges from Worthing, Steve Eanes and Paul Labelle, on board,” he said. “There’s a great banter between them both. They’re like a ‘good cop, bad cop’ partnership.”

He added: “I’m really nervous about what the community will think.”
