Wick man held in paedophile inquiry

POLICE have arrested a Wick man in connection with Operation Algebra, a nationwide paedophile inquiry.

Several police cars and plain clothes and uniformed officers swooped on the man's house in a quiet street on Tuesday (May 12) morning.

Sussex Police were acting on information received from the Lothian and Borders force in Scotland, following the conclusion last week of a court case and investigation which, officers said, dismantled the largest paedophile network in Scotland. Eight men were jailed for child sex abuse cases.

Police intelligence on around 70 other people was sent to forces throughout the UK and resulted in more arrests, including the man in Wick this week.

Another man was arrested in Bognor, and another "target" was identified in East Sussex.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Specialist trained officers are conducting ongoing investigations into suspected paedophiles who have been identified following Operation Algebra, an intelligence gathering and enforcement operation undertaken by Lothian and Borders Police.

"Two men have subsequently been arrested today (Tuesday), one from Littlehampton and one from Bognor."

Details of suspected paedophiles were also passed on by the Scottish force to authorities in Holland and the US.
