Daniel Whiting, formerly of Bognor Regis whose address is listed as 70 Helyers Green, Wick, was also sentenced for stealing cash from Silhouette Hair Salon in Yapton and for shop-lifting at two food stores.

Whiting had previously pleaded guilty to all five charges when he appeared at Chichester Crown Court on Monday, where he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

He was told that his young age and early guilty plea to all charges prevented a sentence closer to five years.

The court heard that in March this year Whiting broke into Holland and Barrett in Littlehampton and stole various items of sports nutrition, food and vitamins to the value of £11,000.

On April 26 Whiting also entered Barnham Kebab House and made off with just over £3,000 in cash.

The following month he also trespassed at Silhouette Hair Salon in Yapton, stealing £50 in cash, while he also pleaded guilty to stealing meats from the Co-op in Barnham and Sainsbury’s in Littlehampton.

Passing sentence judge Christopher Parker QC said: “The most serious offence took place at Holland and Barrett, where £11,000 of stock was stolen and then tried to be sold on.

“It seems to me to be a burglary that’s of high value to the shop keepers with an element of planning involved.

“That would normally require a prison sentence of two years with a range of one to five years and that’s not taking into account a number of previous convictions.”

Whiting was sentence to a combined total of 32 months in prison for the five offences and told he would serve half of that in jail and the rest on licence.

Judge Parker QC added: “Nobody wants a young man to go to prison at all, I can only hope being a father changes you when you come out.”
