Wick protesters say they '˜won't give up' their fight

Campaigners protesting against plans to build new council houses in Wick

More than a dozen campaigners, armed with plaques and signs, gathered outside the Littlehampton Town Council’s headquarters, at Manor House, in Church Street, on Monday evening to hold a peaceful demonstration.

The group is against the scheme by Arun District Council to build 23 council houses on green space and car parking areas in Wick.

The rally followed in the wake of a similar protest outside the Arun District Council’s Civic Centre, in Maltravers Road, last month.

Spokeswoman for the campaigners, Karin Ryk, said: “We will not go away or give up.

“We oppose Arun District Council’s proposed council house building in our car parks and on our greens.

“That is why we held a peaceful demo this evening at the Littlehampton Town Hall, where the town council’s transport and planning committee had a meeting.

“Arun has pledged to build 30 council houses every year and have already earmarked 18 other sites across the district.

“Any open space or green owned by Arun District Council is vulnerable.”

The scheme has yet to be formally approved.

However, Arun has previously claimed that it would help to address a severe shortage in affordable housing across the district.
