Wick shops and schools join in Posada tradition

MARY and Joseph have been travelling around Wick in the build up to Christmas.

Following the Mexican tradition of Posada, All Saints’ Church, in Wick Street, organised the two-week celebration.

The figures of Mary and Joseph were sent out from All Saints’ Church during Advent and will return to the church on Christmas Eve at the 4pm crib service.

Their journey took them along Wick Street to Old Oven Bakery on December 8, St Barnabas House charity shop on December 9 and Rainbow Playgroup in Wick Hall on December 10.

The figures then went to White Meadows Primary Academy, in Whitelea Road, on December 14; Country Life Pet Supplies, in Wick Street, on December 16; Raine hairdressers, in Wick Street, on December 17; Nautical Training Corps Café, in Wick Farm Road, on December 18, and Party Things 2 Go, in Wick Street, on December 22.

They also went to The Flower Shop and the Littlehampton Academy carol concert, Joy to the World, which was performed last Wednesday.

Viv Gillett, pastoral assistant at All Saints’, said: “Posada comes from a Mexican tradition where young people dressed up as Mary and Joseph and travelled from house to house to ask for a room for the night, and telling people about the imminent coming of Jesus in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

“Modern day Posada uses nativity figures of Mary and Joseph, which travel from place to place. This gives each host a chance to create their own celebration with the real meaning of Christmas.”
