Wick Week is a huge success

FROM crafts to karate and from model helicopters to history, with so much more, too, Wick Week could justifiably boast to have offered something for all ages and tastes.

The six-day community celebration, offering dozens of separate events, more than ever before, closed on Saturday night with Party on the Pitch, an afternoon and evening of entertainment at Wick Football Club.

From toddlers to pensioners, all ages were catered for, with a range of children’s activities every day during the week, and, for the over-50s, a Show and Tell lunch and exhibition encouraging people to bring their photos, other memorabilia and stories to Wick Hall to share with each other.

Littlehampton Town Council once again co-ordinated Wick Week, but numerous community groups also pitched in with their own events, and Wick Village Traders’ Association again played a big part.

Among those joining in for the first time were GKR Karate and Explosion Cheerleading.

Town councillor Joyce Bowyer, chairman of the community resources committee, said: “It’s great that so many different groups and organisations came together to put on Wick Week.

“We are grateful to them all for helping to create such a wide-ranging programme.

“It has given residents a chance to see what is going on right in the heart of their community and, hopefully, more people will now take up the chance to participate in activities on a regular basis.”

One such spin-off could be from the Coffee and Create sessions led by The Flower Shop, which proved to be so enjoyable that those who attended now want to continue meeting regularly as a group.

Others were able to show off their sporting prowess at archery, tennis and football, and the ever-popular Wick’s Got Talent at the Wickbourne Centre was another fun evening.Competition from other events and the glorious sunshine might have curtailed the numbers at Party on the Pitch, but organiser Russell Poore remained positive afterwards.

“We had 110 people paying on the gate and as many children there, so, with all the entertainers, we easily had 250 people, more than enough for a good party.

“I’ve learned from this first one and there will be another one next year,” vowed Russell.

Among the acts taking part were the TLA Steel Band, Robbie the Magician and the band Shooting Lead Rabbits.
