Wide range of gardens open for charity over Bank Holiday

Budding and experienced gardeners alike have the chance to stroll round a number of Sussex properties as part of The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) charity.

There’s a great variety of gardens on show, including one with a Japanese influence, a 15th century farmhouse and another that boasts a 200 year old plane tree in the grounds.

Saturday 28 May (1-5pm)

96 Ashford Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 2HZ

Small (100ft x 52ft) Japanese inspired front and back garden. Full of interesting planting, with many acers, azaleas and bamboos.

Over 100 different hostas, many miniature. Lower garden with greenhouse and raised beds. Also an attractive Japanese Tea House.

Admission £3, children free.

15th century timber framed farmhouse with cottage garden on acid clay. Large collection of culinary and medicinal herbs in a small formal garden and mixed with perennials and shrubs in exuberant borders. Long established yew topiary, box hedges and espalier apple trees provide structural elements.

Sunday 29 May (11am - 5pm)

Aldsworth House, Emsworth Common Road, Aldsworth, West Sussex, PO10 8QT

Sheets of crocus and daffodils under a 200 year old plane tree herald spring. This 6 acre garden contains walled and gravel gardens, numerous borders and 2 mini arboretums packed full of a wide variety of unusual trees, shrubs and perennials.

Arundel Gardens, Arundel, West Sussex, BN18 9HL

Two gardens situated in Torton Hill, a residential area. Torton Top, 36 Torton Hill Road, has mature gardens of half an acre with ancient oak trees and large lawn areas, interspersed with well stocked beds and borders full of specimen shrubs, acers, clematis, roses and annuals.

Unique farm setting transformed into a garden of many rooms. Entrance is a tapestry of perennial planting to set off 17th century flint barns. At the rear is a walled, terraced garden redeveloped and planted with an abundance of unusual plants.

Admission £4.50, children free. Home-made teas & wine. This garden also makes a donation to St Mary’s Church.
