Selsey's promenade to the east, East Head at the mouth of Chichester Harbour and Bognor's beautiful seafront will give you sight of the sea and all its ocean birds that pass along the shore throughout the year.

The painting here by Sussex artist Philip Rickman (1891-1982) is one of the finest portraits of our English Channel, with a magical mixture of greens, greys, blues, and siennas among the sharp little waves which soon rear on to the shingle banks.

One of those among the many species that are watched throughout the year by the birders with their telescopes may be a small paddling of eider ducks.
