WHEATSHEAF: The next weekly quiz is at 8.30pm on Tuesday. Prizes are awarded to the winning team and the teams which come second and third.

MEETING: Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council will be holding a finance and policy meeting at 7.30pm on Monday at Willingdon Community School. For further information please ring 01323 489603 or 01323 489104. Meetings are open to the public.

LOCAL HISTORY: Polegate and Willingdon Local History Society will be meeting from 7pm to 9pm today, Friday, at St John’s Church Hall Polegate. Paul Lendon will be giving a talk entitled On the Busses. Visitors are welcome. The fee is just £3.

TRINITY DINERS: The next Trinity Diners meal at Trinity Church hall is today, Friday. Doors open at noon. The menu is fruit juice, chicken pie or vegetable pie, creamed potatoes with seasonal vegetables followed by chocolate sponge with chocolate sauce, tea/coffee. Please ring Jennie on 01323 484189 early to book your place or alternatively turn up at noon and check for cancellations. Meals are £5.50.

A JUMBLE SALE: Will be held from 10am to noon tomorrow, Saturday, at St Wilfrid’s Church. It is in aid of Networx Eastbourne and St Wilfrid’s Church. Tea/coffee and home-made cakes will be available. Admission is 20p.

A MUSIC RECITAL: Will take place at 7.30pm on Monday at St Mary’s Church. Directed by Michael Stumbles, it will include choral items with guest singers and instrumentalists including Susan Lahache (coloratura soprano), Mike Barber (bass/baritone), Gerry Scotford (clarinet) and Valerie Stumbles (piano) and recorders. There will also be various items from the Gibbs String Trio. There is no admission charge. A retiring collection will be made for Children with Cancer.

RAMBLING: Willingdon Church Ramblers will be meeting at Chalk Farm in Coopers Hill at 10.30am on Monday for a circular walk from Wilmington via Littlington and Alfriston. The walk is approximately five miles and includes some steady climbs. For further information please ring Dave or Maureen on 01323 726427. Everyone is welcome.

RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION: Willingdon Residents Association will be having their Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday at Trinity Church Hall. Refreshments will be available. The speaker is to be announced.

BIRTHDAY BEACON: Willingdon Residents Association councillors have arranged for the Parish Council to be part of the National Chain of Beacons to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday at 9pm. Farmer Richard Brown from Chalk Farm has volunteered to help build the Beacon which he has done on many previous occasions. Access will be from Butts Brow and will be clearly signposted to the Beacon. As in the past, there may well be a sing-a-long and it should be a real community event for Willingdon. So do go along and support the council. Wrap up warm and take some refreshments and a torch.

LONE STAR LINERS: Will be having a line dance social from 7.15pm to 10.30pm on Saturday April 23 at Willingdon Memorial Hall. The cost is £5 per person to include tea/coffee and biscuits. MESSY CHURCH: At 7pm on Saturday April 23, there will be an adult version of the children’s Messy Church. It takes place in St Mary’s Church Hall Willingdon and begins with a meal which everyone enjoys together. There will be a brief talk by Fr Kevin and then a lot of craft activities to try. This is a fundraising event, aimed at providing more equipment for the children’s Messy Church. Tickets are £8 each and can be obtained after the Sunday morning service (about 11am) or ring Zoe Harris on 07933371337 or Susan Freeman on 07759932948.

WILLINGDON IN BLOOM: Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council will once again be holding their annual Willingdon in Bloom competition. There will be six categories which are as follows: Front garden, early blooming, cottage; front garden, later blooming, more formal: front garden, Royal Birthday; front garden, unusual and novelty; window boxes, hanging baskets and containers; educational and environment. Please note that categories (1) to (5) should be easily visible to the public and judges. The judges will be scoring for visual impact, first impressions, standard of maintenance, use of colour and design, the best use of available space, as well as special or unusual features. Category (6) must be able to demonstrate educational and environmental awareness and judges will arrange a time to visit.

The closing date for category (1) is Monday June 13 and judging will be during the week commencing Monday June 20. For categories (2) to (5) the closing date is Monday July 4 and judging will start on the week commencing Monday July 11.

Entrants will be notified of the results at the presentation evening to be held in September and results and photographs may be published in the local press. The address of entry must be within the parish of Willingdon and Jevington.
