CHARITY BALL: Eastbourne mayor Cllr Janet Coles has chosen two charities for her year in office. They are Eastbourne RNLI lifeboats and the JPK Sussex Project, which aims to provide supported living accommodation alongside meaningful day time activities for people with a learning disability. The JPK project co-ordinator is Willingdon resident Jill Parker MBE. The mayor's annual charity ball is at the Winter Garden on Friday March 4 from 7pm. Live music will be provided by Tempo One who will be performing tracks from the 60's through to the current day. Other attractions include a raffle, silent auction, casino tables and dancing. A three course meal and casino chips are included in the price of £45, with discounts available for groups of ten or more. Dress code is evening wear. JANE INGLES: Country singer and guitarist will be entertaining customers at the Wheatsheaf from 8.30pm tomorrow, Saturday.

THE WHEATSHEAF: With the Wheatsheaf now having had its minor refurbishments and spring clean, it should once again be open for business this afternoon (Friday). In the evening nibbles will be available for all the customers. It is hoped that a new menu will soon be available but in the meantime bar snacks such as cold pies, scotch eggs and sausage rolls will be on sale. The big screen will be showing all the rugby matches. Round 3 Wales v France is on February 26 and then on February 27 it is Italy v Scotland and England v Ireland.

ST PIRAN’S DAY: On Saturday March 5 The Wheatsheaf is celebrating St Piran’s Day with all things Cornish – a table quiz, Cornish pasties, pirates and Cornish ales, such as Betty Stogs. Felix the Pirate and his good pal Trevelyan will lead the revellers in a lively Gilbert and Sullivan sing-along. Wave the black and white flag, dig out your cutlass and eye-patch, polish up your doubloons, dust off your parrot, and go along and sing a few shanties. Keep your eyes peeled for the fabled Cornish knocker. Cornish pasties will be available all day but the main entertainment starts about 8pm. There will be a cask of Cornish beer at just £1.95 a pint. This is part of a wider charity event for RNLI.

SPONSORED WALK: Myeloma is a bone marrow cancer. Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma through their broad and innovative range of services, which cover every aspect of myeloma from information and support to improving standards of treatment and care through research, education, campaigning and by raising awareness. Willingdon resident Robin Curtis supports this charity, inspired by a close friend who died of the disease in October after a seven and a half year battle. Robin will be taking part in a sponsored 23 mile walk from Polegate to Brighton on Saturday March 5, with about 40 other participants, all are welcome. He will be returning to Polegate by train and is hoping to be in time to visit the Wheatsheaf for part of St Piran’s day. SCHOOL REUNION: Robin is also planning a big school reunion event for the same charity in the main hall at Willingdon Community School Broad Road starting at 6.45pm on Saturday February 27. It will be a real family event. There will be live entertainment, comedy, an auction, raffle, and a school disco. A three course meal will be served with tea/ coffee and there will also be a prefects’ bar. The event will be very informal with a ‘fun science’ demonstration by a college lecturer, and a bit of acting from the adults and children. The design and technology item involves building a tower to hold an egg from art straws. I am not sure whether or not the egg will be a raw. Robin is calling the event School reunion of St Helen’s. Fancy dress is optional. I would imagine that something in the style of the St Trinians’ students and teachers might be appropriate. Tickets are £10 each and are available from Robin at [email protected] .

THE BRITISH QUEEN: Will be showing all the rugby matches on the big screen during the coming weeks. Tomorrow, Saturday, Andrew Newley will be providing the entertainment from 8.30pm.

TRINITY DINERS: The next lunch at Trinity Church hall is today, Friday. Doors open at noon. The menu is fruit juice, luxury fish pie or a vegetarian shepherdess pie, seasonal vegetables followed by Bakewell tart and cream, tea/coffee. The meals are £5.50. LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Polegate and Willingdon Local History Society will be meeting from 7pm to 9pm today, Friday, at St John’s Church Hall Polegate. Brian Halford is the speaker and his topic is the Spa Valley Railway. All visitors are welcome. The fee is just £3.

LINE DANCE CLASSES: Ros Burtenshaw also teaches line dancing so that the Lone Star Liners can enjoy their social evenings even more. On Mondays Ros teaches at St Saviour’s and St Peter’s Church in Spencer Road Eastbourne. Beginners come to the 10.30am to 11.15am class followed by the improvers from11.30am to 12.30pm. On Tuesdays Ros is teaching the intermediates from 11.30am to 1pm at Willingdon Memorial Hall in Church Street. She is at the Memorial Hall again on Fridays when it is the turn of the beginners from 10am to 10.50am followed by the improvers from 11am to noon.

MEETING: Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council will be holding a full council meeting at 7.30pm at Willingdon Community School. Please ring 01323 489603 for further information. Meetings are open to the public.

SUNRISE SENIOR LIVING: At 6 Upper Kings Drive will be holding a Dementia Friends Session from 10.30am to 11.30am on Thursday. This is part of the Alzheimer’s initiative, giving a greater understanding of dementia and what it is like to live with the condition. OPEN DAY: Two days later on Saturday February 27, Sunrise is having an open day from 10am to 4pm when members of the public will be welcome to go along and have a look round at the many facilities which are offered to the residents. It is certainly not your average home.

WANNOCK ARTISTS: Meet from 7pm to 9pm on the last Friday of the month at Wannock Village Hall. On Friday February 26 Stephen Cheeseman will be giving a watercolour demonstration entitled Movement – Horses. The annual fee to become a member is £18.
