Marion Molteno: This evening (Friday) Marion Molteno is giving her talk on '˜A Sense of Place' at the Literary Society's meeting in the Court Hall at 7 for 7.30pm. A South African writer Molteno will be talking about '˜A Sense of Place' in her novels and taking the view that '˜we are formed by the places we love, leave behind or make our own'. She has worked for many years as a social worker with the UN and published five novels the most recent being '˜Uncertain Light'. During the talk Molteno will be referring to three of her novels, each set in a different continent: Uncertain Light in Tajikistan, Central Asia; If you can walk, you can dance in various parts of Africa; and Somewhere More Simple on the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. This meeting includes the Society's Annual General Meeting.

Morning of song: There will be ‘Hymns and Songs of Praise’ at the meeting in the Wesley Hall on Saturday March 18th. Starting at 10am light refreshments will be served and at 10.30am the organ will strike its first notes and all will break into song. The hymns will have been chosen by church members and plenty of voices are needed to swell the singing for the passing traffic to hear, so do come along and join in.

FOAM AGM: The Friends of the Ancient Monuments and Museum are holding their Annual General Meeting on Saturday March 18th in the Lower Court Hall. All members should attend and there will be coffee from 10am with the meeting beginning at 10.30am.

Easter Flowers: There is a special lily fund in St Thomas’ Church at Easter in memory of a loved one and the minimum contribution is £3. An attractive display of lilies is on show in the church near the alter. If you would like to give a lily to the display by making a contribution, please phone 01797 223159.

Daffodils: 2017 has proved to be a good year for daffodils. On the dusty sides of roads, in fields and churchyards they have been growing in profusion like wild flowers. Their trumpets seeming to proclaim something special. The grass verges of Winchelsea are rich with these golden displays and we can only thank the hidden hands of the planters for their generosity. Since God cares for the sparrows and daffodils (ref: Matthew 6: 25-30) how much more does he care for each one of us? Weather conditions may have been favourable for the daffodils’ growth this year but they tolerate a range of soils with some moisture. The quintessential spring flower they are a sign that warmer weather is on its way. It was believed that the Romans brought the daffodils to Britain to cultivate them, mistakenly thinking that the sap could heal wounds but instead it irritated the skin. However, a chemical found in the bulbs of flowering plants including daffodils, essential for memory and thought, is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. Although expensive to produce due to the low levels of the chemical found in the plants it is used worldwide.

Church meeting: This Sunday March 19th being the third Sunday in the month there will not be a service at St Richard’s Church. Instead all are invited to the 11am service on Sunday in St Thomas’ Church which will be led by the Archdeacon of Hastings, Dr Edward Dowler.

Bingo event: On Wednesday March 22nd there is another chance of winning the jackpot at the next Cash Bingo event. The evening begins at 7 for 7.15pm in the Community Hall and there will be light refreshments available plus a raffle.
