Advent windows: Every December there are delightful scenes to observe in the windows of many houses in the town. This year's Advent window displays have traditional and modern themes and each one will be lit at 4.30pm except for Christmas Eve when the Nativity window will be lit at 5.15pm. Badges and maps are on sale daily at the Farm Shop and the Black Cat Gallery and the chosen charity this year is the Salvation Army. The Advent windows are a great yearly attraction and thank you to everyone who has created a window and to the badge making team.

Talk by Denis Moriarty: This evening (Friday) the Literary Society is meeting at 7 for 7.30pm in the Lower Court Hall for a talk on the seriously amusing works of Edward Lear. Giving the talk is Denis Moriarty who spent most of his working life since 1959 as a BBC television producer. His programmes included, Face The Music with Joseph Cooper and Joyce Grenfell, One Hundred Great Paintings and films on Egypt in the Chronicle and Timewatch series. In 2014 he spoke at the Literary Society on John Betjeman.

Christmas words and music: The Wesley Chapel will be open tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 10 for a 10.30am start to the Christmas Praise celebration and everybody is welcome. Keith Miller will once again be leading the singing and readings with the other Worship Leaders. After the meeting refreshments will be served.

Carol Concert: The Winchelsea Singers annual Carol Concert is this Saturday December 10th at 7pm in St Thomas’ Church and all invited. Admission is £10 on the door which includes seasonal refreshments and proceeds are in aid of St Michael’s Hospice.

Carols round the town: Carol singing around the town will take place this year on Monday and Tuesday December 12th and 13th meeting in the church porch at 6pm. A robust singing voice, warm clothes, sturdy footwear and a torch will help bring in the Christmas tidings to every street in the town. Children are welcome accompanied by an adult and if you are unable to join the group but would like a visit with a choice of carol please contact 01797 222772. Last year the carol singing raised £400 for Shelter and the group hopes to do even better this year.

Second Wednesday Society: Meeting next in the New Hall on Wednesday December 14th at 2pm for drinks and the Annual General Meeting. The talk which will commence at 2.30pm will be given by Katherine Hook on the subject of ‘Sloe Seduction’. Katharine will be recalling her business adventure involving sloe gin and cocoa. A homemade tea follows the talk and the cost is £1 or £4 for non-members.

Literary meet: The town’s Book Group is meeting at 2pm on Monday December 12th at Backfield Place. For members, ‘Me Before You’ the romantic novel by Jojo Moyes (published in 2012 in the UK) will be introduced and discussed as a group.

FOAM carols: There will be Carols in the Court Hall with the Friends of the Ancient Monuments on Friday December 16th at 6.30pm. This annual event brings the town together to sing many popular carols and afterwards to enjoy a glass of wine plus refreshments so do come along.

Christina Ortiz: Coming soon the Piano recital in memory of talented pianist Tom Harris will be held on Saturday December 17th at 7.30pm in St Thomas’ Church. The recital will be given by Cristina Ortiz who has played in most concert halls and was invited to be the soloist at orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw which is a concert hall in Amsterdam. Winchelsea Arts is hosting the event and tickets are £20 each and £6.50 under 18s from the Farm Kitchen.

IPC meeting: On Monday December 12th Icklesham Parish Council will be meeting at 7pm (not 7.15pm) in the Community Hall. Southern Water will be attending this meeting to give an update on the flood situation in the area. It has been at least two years since the tankers were brought to Sea Road to remove the excess surface water. They are still in operation and continue to create noise and traffic delays near the Community Hall and Co-op store. The issue has yet to be sufficiently resolved and Rother District Council has now employed a specialist officer to deal with the matter. This meeting is open to the public so do attend if possible.

Christmas party: This year’s Children’s Party will be on Friday December 16th from 4.30 till 6.30pm in the Community Hall. The party is for primary school age children and is free for children living at Winchelsea Beach but if you bring a friend or relative there will be a charge of £3. Members meal: The WBCA Members Christmas Meal is on Monday December 19th at 3.30 for 4pm in the Community Hall. There is no charge for paid up members but you will need to book your place by giving your name to Judy at the Post Office or ringing 01797 224820 by December 12th.
