Rose and Clematis: Tomorrow (Saturday) is the Garden Society's annual Rose, Sweet Pea and Clematis show. This will be in the Lower Court Hall from 10.30am when coffee will be available. Looking their optimal best these fragrant well-nurtured flowers will be exhibited and judged before 11am with cups presented at 12 noon.

IPC meeting: Icklesham Parish Council will next be meeting on Monday June 13th at 7.15pm in the New Hall and local residents can attend. During the last meeting on May 9th Mrs Patsy Hollands from Winchelsea Beach was co-opted as the new ward councillor for Winchelsea. There were five applications for the councillor post which included residents from Winchelsea. Mrs Hollands is filling the casual vacancy left by Clive Pope who was also co-opted on to the council and from Winchelsea Beach.

Cricket matches: The season continues throughout the summer on Sundays with Winchelsea CC at home to Ibis on June 12th, to Pett on June 26th and Bodiam on July 3rd. They will be playing away to Lydd on June 19th. The matches all start at 2.30pm and Winchelsea matches are played in the Cricket Field next to the New Hall.

Joyful Noise: An evening of music, words and song will take place at the Wesley Chapel on Wednesday June 15th at 7.30pm. This is a return visit of the ‘Come and Sing’ choir, Joyful Noise, under the leadership of Stephen Page. The choir will be singing for approximately 1 hour a wide range of hymns and other sacred music from different traditions through the centuries to the present day. All are invited to come and sing with the choir and afterwards refreshments will be served.

9 Open gardens: The main Open Gardens event for the year, in aid of the National Gardens Scheme is next Saturday June 18th. Opening hours are 1 till 5.30pm and joint admission is £6 p.p. and free for children. The gardens involved are Alards, The Well House, Periteau House, Cleveland Place, Cleveland House, The Armoury, Backfields End, Chestnut Cottage and The Orchards. Also Friary Gardeners will provide a plant stall in Castle Street and teas will be served in the New Hall from 2 till 5pm.

Glebe House: A Trip to Glebe House on Main Street Northiam is on offer with the Garden Society for Monday June 27th in the afternoon. If you would like to go, please contact 01797 226428 or [email protected] to arrange lifts and provide directions. Glebe House has an expertly designed rectory garden which provides colourful growth from spring to autumn. There is also a wildlife pond, a vegetable garden and many well established specimen trees.

Winchelsea Beach

Beach Church celebrations: Next weekend, June 18th and 19th all are invited to a Flower and Crafts Festival entitled: ‘The Church on the Beach’ which follows a seaside theme to celebrate the local community. This will be between 10am and 5pm at St Richard’s Church on Sea Road (opposite the Co-op). On Sunday 19th at 3.30pm the weekend will close with a ‘Songs of Celebration’ service for the St Richard’s Patronal Festival and it is hoped for a good turnout from both churches. Refreshments will be served throughout both days and if you would like to make a donation all funds would be gratefully received.

Waterloo Day: June 18th also covers Waterloo Day which is remembered every year especially by the British Army as well as local residents with links to the forces. It celebrates Napoleon’s defeat by the allied forces on June 18th 1815 at Waterloo in Belgium. Napoleon regarded himself as a type of Alexander the Great and a Julius Caesar in conquering Europe and crowning himself Emperor of a vast empire. Everything seemed to go his way for a few years until pride and greed caused him to make big mistakes. Taking advantage of this weakness Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia and Sweden joined forces against France which, as a result, lost the war. This led to Napoleon being exiled and nations of Europe being freed from his dictatorship.
