Coffee morning: Tomorrow, Saturday May 21st there will be a Christian Aid Coffee Morning at the Wesley Chapel from 10am till noon. Also a small Bring and Buy stall will be at hand. Everybody is invited on this last day of Christian Aid week to drop in, have a look round the historical chapel and enjoy a coffee with the friends.

St Thomas’ Church: The Annual General Meeting of the Friends will take place on Saturday May 21st at 10.30am in the church. Constitutional matters will be discussed and voted on, along with building maintenance, so Friends should make sure to attend. There will be a Confirmation Service at 7.30pm on Thursday May 26th at 7.30pm for the entire Deanery of Rye. The service will be conducted by the Revd Martin Warner Bishop of Chichester. A good number are expected to be confirmed and if you would like to be included please contact the Rector Robin Whitehead. Following the Parochial Church Council (PCC) election results the Church Wardens are now John Rodley and Charlotte Beecroft who replaces Sue Chetwood. After seven years’ service as Church Warden Sue Chetwood stood down this year but was elected as a member of the PCC.

Attic sale: This year’s Country House Attic Sale takes place on Saturday May 21st in the New Hall. Admission is £5 for early birds at 10.30am and £1 to all at 11am. All sorts of items will be on sale such as exotic plants and seeds, antiques, bric-a-brac, vintage and second-hand clothes, plus refreshments. The proceeds are in aid of Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital which is a registered charity.

Mobile Library: For your change of books, DVDs and information the Mobile Library will be in Castle Street on Wednesday May 25th. This will be at 11 till 11.30am and the next visit is in three weeks time.

Morris dancing: In Castle Street on Sunday May 29th at 5pm. The annual visit of the East Surrey Morris will be accompanied by sides from Wimbledon and Utrecht. East Surrey Morris has been visiting Winchelsea for the last 60 years on Whitsunday and this year will be taking a collection for the charity Canine Partners. The Bonfire Boyes and Mummers will be hosting the Morris dancers over the weekend. Canine Partners Southern Centre is based in Heyshott, West Sussex. Its role is to assist disabled people to enjoy a better quality of life and independence through the help of specially trained dogs.

A good read: Jonty Driver gave popular novelist Samantha Harvey a hard grilling at Friday’s Literary Society meeting. As was his intent he asked tricky questions and probed for details of her writing techniques and expertise on diverse themes. This unwavering style of interview which Samantha responded to with equal determination opened up an interesting discussion. The audience seated in a large circle were keen to hear more and had opportunity to join in. With a background in philosophy and creative writing Samantha was able to defend her position using intriguing explanations, metaphors and anecdotes. A good deal of her writing is focused on time and how the past and present interrelate in people’s lives. This device appears in her first and third novels ‘The Wilderness’ and ‘Dear Thief’. Both books are concerned with the mix of reliable, inaccurate and confused memories and the dramas that ensue. In The Wilderness the protagonist an architect suffers with Alzheimer’s disease and as he looks back he has a sense of going home to his childhood. Memories become blurred but some aspects are clear. Once he was a builder but in the story he is slowly being demolished by the workings of time and seemingly alone. Dear Thief is written as a long letter in the second person ‘you’ to a friend not seen for years. It reveals memories of a ‘love triangle’ concerning the thief who stole the narrator’s husband and the jealousy and betrayal that remained. The books are journeys into the minds of the characters and also reveal more about the author although Samantha denies being in her books. During the talk she was very modest about her achievements and at the end gave interesting clues about the history novel she is currently writing.

Mobile Library: Books for adults and children, DVDs, reference materials and audiobooks, the Mobile Library comes to Sea Road every three weeks. The next visit is on Wednesday May 25th at the usual time of 11.40 till 12.15pm.

Table Sale: There will be a Table Sale on Bank Holiday Monday May 30th at 11am in the Community Hall. If you would like a table the cost is £6 and the number to contact is 01797 224820. For everyone coming along to buy entrance is 50p which includes a place to sit with tea and biscuits.
