God and man: The singing of Joy to the World opened the celebration of Advent in Wesley’s Methodist Chapel last Saturday morning. Plenty of friends from Bexhill to Rye came to sing and hear the readings of the Worship Leaders conducted by Fairlight’s Keith Miller on the keyboard. The readings included a retelling of the historical record and genealogy of Jesus Christ the Son of David and the Son of Abraham from Matthew 1:1. This record is organised into three sets of fourteen generations starting from Abraham to Isaac and Jacob through to David then Solomon from whom Joseph the legal father of Jesus was descended to Jesus who was begotten by the Holy Spirit. Matthew’s record synchronises with Luke’s record (chapter 3:23-38) which shows Mary’s lineage back to Nathan son of David and brother of Solomon and continues further back to Noah the son of Lamech and finally to Seth the son of Adam which was the son of God. Everybody listened, many enthralled as the genealogy was read out (totalling 77 generations). Thus proving the Lord Jesus Christ is the Messiah as foretold in the scriptures and reminding how low He the Lord God stooped to come into this world to save the human race. During the service a collection was taken in aid of Action for Children which supports neglected children and their families. Finally it would not have been complete without tea, coffee and mince pies and these were generously served to all who came along.
