October Market: Tomorrow is the first Saturday in the month when residents and friends look forward to taking a break at the Church Market in St Thomas’ from 10.30am to noon. As usual tempting refreshments and percolated coffee will be served, with places to relax in the majestic surroundings. Also on sale will be freshly grown and baked produce from local gardens and ovens. The proceeds are used for church maintenance and last month’s Market raised £346.55 which will help towards repairs to the churchyard walls due to be undertaken this week. Following the popular demand of this year’s CD-sized calendar, resident Mike de Smith has assembled a new collection of colour photos of Winchelsea for next year and as 2016 is almost upon us these calendars will be available for £5 each at the Church Market.

Harvest Thanksgiving: The Harvest Supper will take place tomorrow at 6pm in the New Hall and will include Shepherd’s Pie or vegetarian option, a dessert followed by a Barn Dance from 7.30pm. If you would like to go there may still be places and the number to ring is 01797 226262. As this is the season of Harvest Festivals St Thomas’ Church will be celebrating with a Harvest praise Holy Communion service on Sunday October 4th at 10.30am. The church will be decorated with the fruits and richness of a good harvest and all are welcome to attend and give thanks to the Lord God for supplying our needs.

Cults and Shrines: On Saturday October 10th Dr John Crook, consultant archaeologist to Winchester Cathedral, St George’s Windsor and St Cross Hospital at Winchester will be talking on English Medieval Cults and Shrines at 3 till 4.30pm in St Thomas’ Church. The cost is £4 non-members and is free to members and under 16s with proceeds in aid of Winchelsea Archaeological Society. Dr Crook is an authority on English shrines and has published numerous books and papers on the cult of saints and the creation of medieval shrines used to protect their relics.

After the War: There will be a talk entitled ‘Winchelsea after the War’ starting at 2.30pm on Saturday October 24th in the New Hall for all to hear. Malcolm Pratt MBE recently retired Town Clerk to Winchelsea Corporation and one time resident, will be the Speaker and the talk will be followed by afternoon tea. This event is arranged by the local charity Friends of the Ancient Monuments in Winchelsea and there will be an admission charge of £5 on the door.

Flossie Malavialle: The dynamic French singer Flossie Malavialle is returning to Winchelsea to sing the songs of Jacques Brel & Edith Piaf and will be accompanied by Paul Donnelly and Simon Keegan-Phipps. She has performed in many British folk festivals since 2000 playing an acoustic guitar and singing with cool fluency in French and English from a wide repertoire of songs. The concert will be on Saturday October 31st at 7 for 7.30pm in St Thomas’ Church and tickets are £15 each by phone on 01797 224446 or from Grammar School Records in Rye.

Macmillan success: Huge thanks to everyone for their generous donations towards Macmillan Cancer Support. The Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on the 25th September in the Court Hall raised £692. It was a great success and there was lots of chatter which created a very relaxed atmosphere and the Cake table was most impressive, as were the Bring and Buy and Raffle tables. Many Winchelsea residents supported the event and enjoyed the lovely cakes and biscuits. The organisers wish to thank all the bakers and helpers and to those who attended the event.

Harvest origins: A time of repentance, rest and rejoicing is how the Rev Tricia Williams introduced the Harvest celebration at the special service last Saturday morning which was followed by a very wholesome lunch. She reminded us that this Festival like all Christian Festivals throughout the year has its origins in the Old Testament Jewish Festivals also recorded in the New Testament, and Harvest is the Autumn Feasts of the Lord from Leviticus 23:23-44. It includes the Days of Trumpets and Atonement followed by the Feast of Tabernacles which commemorates the forty years in the desert by living in booths and resting from work for one week. These latter feasts which occur in the autumn months represent what God will do at his appointed times at the end of the age with the gathering in of the harvest of those who believe. This year’s Festival had the added bonus of a full moon last weekend and in addition to being a traditional ‘harvest moon’ it was at its closes point to Earth making a total lunar eclipse or blood moon. This dramatic event was spotted by those who remembered to set their alarms for 2am on Monday morning.

Harvest Praise: This Sunday October 4th there will be a Harvest Songs of Praise service at St Richard’s Church with the Rector Robin Whitehead for all to enjoy. The service is combined with the monthly Evening Prayer meeting and will begin at 3.30pm and be followed by light refreshments.

Evening Bingo: On Wednesday October 7th there will be an opportunity to win the Cash Bingo jackpot in the Community Hall during the fortnightly evening of Bingo. The suspense begins at 7.15pm with eyes down and ears alert for the numbers as they are announced and as always it will be somebody’s special night. Children supervised by an adult are welcome to come along and light refreshments and a raffle will be available.
