Tomorrow’s Church Market: This Saturday September 5th is the monthly Church Market for all to relax with tea/coffee in good company. A tempting selection of home-made and home-grown produce will be on sale as well as quality hardback books and plants. As usual a good turnout is expected for this popular social event and the proceeds will be gratefully received for church funds. The August Church Market made the useful sum of £342.80 and so thank you to all for supporting the event.

Annual Autumn Show: Shapely, ripe, clear-skinned and blemish-free fruit and vegetables will be in strong competition for the trophies. Also flowers in perfect bloom, cookery, floral art and handicrafts in adults and children’s classes. Not to mention the refreshments and raffle, all of which make for a grand Autumn Show and the Garden Society look forward to seeing plenty of visitors tomorrow (Saturday). Admission is 50p and the Show starts at 2pm in the New Hall.

Winchelsea Arts Concert: ‘A Konzert Affair’ performed by international musicians will be held in St Thomas’ Church tomorrow September 5th at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £6 for under 18s and can be bought from Winchelsea Farm Kitchen. Talented young violinist Itamar Rashkovsky and Italian pianist Luis Pares will be presenting works by Leclair, Mozart, Dvorak and Korngold.

Under Winchelsea: Two Cellar Tour dates in September for your diary are Saturday 5th and Sunday 20th at 2pm meeting in Castle Street. The phone number for bookings is 01797 224446 and the cost is £5 p.p. with detailed guide books provided. Members of Winchelsea Archaeological Society will be conducting the 90 minute tours which will be looking at the craftsmanship involved in building the medieval cellars and the importance of the wine trade.

On the ocean waves: The Second Wednesday Society will be meeting on Wednesday September 9th at 2.30pm in the New Hall for a talk with refreshments to follow. ‘No Sea Too Rough’ is the subject of the talk given by Shane Redmond who will be recounting a life on the ocean waves and a significant visit to the Falklands in 1982.

Ride and Stride: The annual Heritage Open Days takes place next weekend and on Saturday September 12th the Methodist Chapel will be open to visitors from 10am till 5pm with light refreshments available. This is also the Sussex Churches sponsored ‘Ride and Stride’ Day which takes place every year on the second Saturday in September. The participants visit as many churches as they wish and plan their own route and means of travel in order to raise money for the maintenance of historic churches and chapels in the region.

Blackfriars’ Tour: Please meet in the Cricket Field for the Blackfriars’ Barn Cellar Tours on Saturday 12th at 11am and Sunday 13th September at 11am and 2pm as part of the Heritage Open Days event. These are free guided tours led by WAS (Winchelsea Archaeological Society) to take a closer look at this medieval ruin and the unique graffiti impressions of sailing ships etched in the cellar walls.

Bank Holiday Thunder: ‘The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.’ (2 Samuel 22:14) The typically hot August Bank Holiday ended last Sunday night in a dramatic thunder storm which boomed and resonated across the heavens. Flashes of lighting tore through the coal black clouds and the sky resembled a fiery furnace. Eventually in the early hours it ceased only to restart for a short time on the Monday morning accompanied by torrential rain. Just what the dry ground needed.

Evening Prayer: The monthly Evening Prayer service hosted by St Richard’s Church resumes on September 6th after the summer break. This will be at 3.30pm to be followed by a baptism at 4.15pm led by the Rector Robin Whitehead, with light refreshments after the service.

Bingo: The evening of Wednesday September 9th is a brief moment set aside to enjoy Cash Bingo in the Community Hall. With eyes down at 7.15pm and every possibility of winning the jackpot all are welcome to participate, in the hope of good fortune coming their way. Refreshments and a raffle will also be available and players must be over 16 years.
