Literary Sagas: Richard Thomas is giving a talk this evening (Friday) on the subject of Sagas and will be drawing on his knowledge of Old Norse the Viking language and three years spent in Iceland. As part of the evening the Literary Society will be holding its Annual General Meeting and light refreshments will be available. Non-members are welcome to come along and the doors are open as usual at 7 for 7.30pm in the Lower Court Hall.

FOAM: The Friends of the Ancient Monuments and Museum will be holding their Annual General Meeting tomorrow (February 28th) at 10am in the Lower Court Hall. Their work in preserving the important buildings of the town is much valued. Most recently Winchelsea Museum, situated in the Upper Court Hall, was awarded the Arts Council’s national accreditation for its management, services and care of its collection. This was also achieved through the vital contribution made by the volunteer stewards. However some areas of improvement were identified and over the past year these issues have been addressed. A computer was purchased to improve record keeping and the many paper records of museum artefacts have been copied onto the PC. To improve the museum environment an expensive but necessary dehumidifier was purchased and installed to ensure appropriate humidity levels are maintained. FOAM was thanked for their generous support in contributing 50% of the cost of the item.

Church Electoral Roll: The deadline to apply for enrolment this year on the Church Electoral Roll of the Parish of Winchelsea is Saturday March 7th. Being on the Electoral Roll enables you to be nominated, if you so choose, for the position of Churchwarden and also to join the Church Council. If you are already included on the Electoral Roll please check your entry for accuracy and amend if necessary, otherwise application forms are available at the back of St Thomas’ Church. A further date for your diary is the Annual Parochial Church Meeting which is on Saturday March 21st.

Speed Watch: Last September the Strand Gate which is the first entrance into Winchelsea from Rye was damaged yet again by an oversize lorry getting stuck but forcing its way through. This is despite a height restriction of 7 foot on the Gate. The Strand Gate is one of the original medieval stone gates of the town built in the late 13th century. The other two are the Pipewell Gate on Ferry Hill/A259 and the New Gate in Wickham Rock Lane. When a lorry caused damage to this Grade 1 listed monument in 2008 the Strand Gate Appeal was set up and it raised over £20,000 towards the repair. In response to this current problem Winchelsea Speed Watch has begun an initiative to stop oversized vehicles from using the gate which involves intermittent monitoring and reporting to Operation Crackdown. So if you have a lorry you can still enter Winchelsea by turning into one of the side streets off the Rectory Lane/A259 bypass.

Songs of Praise: Everybody is welcome to the Songs of Praise service at St Richard’s Church this Sunday March 1st with Canon Robin Whitehead. As it is the first Sunday in the month the service begins at 3.30pm and will be followed by light refreshments.

Chat and Quiz: the WOPPS Older Persons Project continues on Mondays from 10.30am to 2.30pm in the Community Hall. This is an opportunity to get together with a good mix of people and share in the chat over a hot meal. A quiz will also be held to exercise those thinking skills and if required there is plenty of general advice available. Please contact 07947 618989 if you need transport and come along next Monday.
