Winchelsea Garden Society: The Annual General Meeting for the Garden Society takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am in the Lower Court Hall. Included on the agenda will be the election of officers, the presentation of accounts and a review of last year; to be followed by coffee and tea. Membership remains at £3 for 2015 and new membership cards and show schedules will be available at the meeting. Also don’t forget to put in your diaries the Winter Lecture at 2.30pm on Saturday February 21st in the New Hall and the speaker this year is Helen Yemm.

Last Post: At 4.30 for 4.39pm tomorrow sunset, a bugler will sound the Last Post in St Thomas’ churchyard at the graveside of Basil Lees Inderwick. A wreath will also be laid to mark one hundred years since his death in the First World War. Private 46847, 17th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry, Basil Lees Inderwick, son of Charles and Ella Inderwick of Perth, Canada, died of meningitis on January 24th 1915 aged 28 years. His name is not on the War Memorial but he is buried in the south-west corner of the churchyard. The bugler is provided by Sussex Brass and has been organised by Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes who annually mark the start and end of the Two-Minute Silence on Armistice Day by launching signal rockets. There will be similar public ceremonies held over the next four years for all the men whose names appear on the Winchelsea War Memorial.

Conservation Society visit planned: On Tuesday March 3rd (2015) you are invited to join Winchelsea Conservation Society on their trip to Chatham Dock Yard. The visit will comprise 10.30am arrival at The Old Commissioners House for coffee followed by a coach tour of the area. Lunch will be available at 1pm after which visitors will be free to visit individual parts of the dock yard before returning home. Transport will be by private cars with sharing where possible. No D’Oyly Carte: The recently publicised, ‘Behind the Scenes at the D’Oyly Carte’ music performance for January 31st has unfortunately been postponed. However due to the good response it is hoped to be shown later in the year.

Micah 6:6-8: The week of Prayer for Christian Unity was celebrated last Sunday in St Thomas’ Church as a combined service with the Friends of the Methodist Chapel. Canon Robin Whitehead conducted the service which was attended by about 60 people from the parish and Methodist minister Rev’d Ian Pruden preached from Micah 6 on justice and mercy. One of the most popular verses among both Jews and Christians promoting social justice is Micah 6:8 which reads, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” The word of God reveals Christian Unity as a Unity in Christ for believers and it is essentially of a spiritual nature: “For ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28). Unlike ecumenism which is not a genuine basis of Christian Unity because of its inclusivism which tries to put together all kinds of religions and ideologies into one universal pot and according to the Bible is apostasy. God’s people today will continue to desire justice, mercy, and humility before the Lord, as part of His body. And so for the sake of Christian Unity at the present time it is important to allow the New Testament to teach the concept of unity and to maintain good Bible study.

Parochial Church Council: A reminder to PCC members is that there will be a meeting this evening (Friday) at 7pm in St Richard’s Church, Winchelsea Beach. There has been a new statutory fee structure set by the CofE for 2015 and 2016 and charges will be amended for hiring the Church for events to enable more accessibility to the community.

Winter Ramble: If you are ready for a Winter Ramble around Pett Level you can join Phil Jones and Chris Bentley as they look out for wintering birds on the levels and in the reed beds. You will need to bring lunch and binoculars if you have them. The walk is about four miles and the place to meet is at the roadside pool at Pett Level (TQ 903 146) on Sunday January 24th at 10.30am to be finished by 2pm. You do not need to book and donations towards Rye Harbour Nature Reserve would be appreciated.

Fellowship Lunch: The first Lunch of the year will be held next Friday January 30th at 12 for 12.30pm in the Winchelsea Beach Community Hall. As usual all are invited but you will need to let Joan know on 227394 in order to plan for the catering.
