Orpheus: This weekend the Winchelsea Singers are presenting Orpheus in the Underworld, the comic operetta by Jacques Offenbach, in the New Hall. Orpheus was a famous musician who travelled to Hades and played his lyre in an attempt to bring his wife Eurydice back from there. The first performance is this afternoon (Friday) at 2pm with refreshments and then tomorrow November 8th at 7pm when there will be a bar. Tickets cost £10 each and are available by phoning 01797 223159 or at Winchelsea Farm Kitchen.

Remembrance services: The following services will be held at St Thomas’ Church: on Sunday November 9th the Eucharist at 9.30am; then at 11am the two minutes silence and a wreath laying ceremony by the War Memorial, followed at 11.10am by the Remembrance service (non-denominational) attended by the Mayor and Corporation. On Armistice Day, Tuesday November 11th at 11am there will be a time of silence and prayer at the War Memorial.

Birth pains: Here is a reflection of the Great War which continued into WW2: ‘For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. These are the beginning of birth pains (travail).’ Matthew 24:8.

War display: In the Lady Chapel by the font at St Thomas’ Church, there will be a photographic display to pay tribute to the young men from Winchelsea who fought and were killed in the Great War. The display will be set up for this weekend by Melvyn Pett along the lines of the interesting exhibition which he provided in the Court Hall in August.

Finland: Winchelsea’s Second Wednesday Society will be meeting on Wednesday November 12th at the usual time of 2.30pm in the New Hall. This month’s talk is given by Graham Albon and is entitled: Finland the land that inspired Sibelius. Jean Sibelius, a Finnish composer of western classical music in the early part of the 20th century became popular when he produced a set of seven symphonies. The cost is £1 members and £4 non-members and includes a home-made tea after the talk.

Commemoration WWI: The Literary Society next meets on Friday November 14th at 7 for 7.30pm in the Court Hall. Members are invited to bring poetry and prose to share on the theme: Commemoration of 1914.

Talk at the Chapel: Rev Ian Pruden, the Management Committee Chairman, will be sharing his thoughts on ‘Spirituality and Faith in World War I’. This will be next Saturday November 15th at the Methodist Chapel and all are invited. Light refreshments will be served at 10 to be followed by the talk at 10.30am.

Prayer Partner: Please take a leaflet, fill in the slip and put it in the box provided at the back of St Thomas’ Church if you wish to take part in this year’s Prayer Partner Scheme. Leaflets will be there until November 23rd. The new scheme begins on Advent Sunday, November 30th when all participants come forward at the church to choose a slip and after checking it is not their own or a family member, they keep it secretly. Prayers to the partner are made over the year and greeting cards can also be sent and simply signed ‘from your prayer partner’.

Something Else: Entertainment for tomorrow Saturday November 8th in Pub 31, Winchelsea Beach. This will be the rock and roll band Something Else, as from 8.30pm.

Remembrance Services: All are invited from St Richard’s Church, Winchelsea Beach, plus friends and visitors, to the Remembrance services at St Thomas’ Church. These are on Sunday November 9th and Armistice Day Tuesday November 11th, both at 11am.

IPC Meeting: Icklesham Parish Council will be meeting on Monday November 10th at 6.15pm in the Winchelsea Beach Community Hall. If you have any questions or queries bring them along for the beginning of the meeting.
