Looking for Lost Lands: On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September Winchelsea Archaeological Society has arranged a free entry, drop-in event in the Court Hall between 10am and 4pm. This is an opportunity to meet and talk to Dr Scott Timpany about his team’s survey of the submerged forests and flooded peat deposits at Pett Level. There will also be a chance to examine samples and tree ring sections the team have taken and learn about their discoveries. In addition if you would like to help with field work taking place next Friday October 3rd please call WAS on 01797 224446. You just need to wear your wellies and all ages and experience are welcome to participate.

Methodist Harvest Festival: The Methodist Chapel is open for the annual Harvest Festival service tomorrow, Saturday September 27th at 11am. Revd Michael Ward, retired minister within the Methodist circuit, will be leading the celebration service and this will be followed by the Harvest Lunch. The lunch is provided in return for a donation and there is no need to book, just come along and enjoy.

The Tomb of Christ: This is an illustrated talk by Dr John Crook concerning an archaeological investigation in Jerusalem from 1989-98 at the 4th century Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The talk will be held in Brede Village Hall, Cackle Street TN31 6HG on Wednesday October 1st at 7.30pm. Admission which includes cheese, biscuits and a glass of wine is £7.50 and the number to contact is 01424 751165 for tickets.

Harvest Supper: This year’s Harvest Supper is much more of a community event with live music featuring the Twin Arts Barn Dance Band and dancing. It will be held in the New Hall on Saturday October 4th at 6pm and as usual the ticket price will cover everything except drinks which can either be bought of purchased at the event. The cost of tickets is £8 p.p. and £5 under 12’s and as the organisers need to know numbers please sign up at the back of the church or buy from the Farm Kitchen. Families and friends are all very welcome to attend and have a great time.

Walking Festival: Part of the 1066 Walking Festival involves a varied ‘green’ guided walk from Winchelsea to Battle on Saturday October 4th meeting at 9.50 am at Winchelsea Railway Station. This is a moderate walk of thirteen miles crossing the Brede Valley and the High Weald Area of Natural Beauty, stopping for lunch in Sedlescombe and finishing outside Battle Abbey. You will need to wear sturdy footwear plus waterproof clothing and dogs are allowed on leads. If you are interested in joining the walk please contact 01424 451101. At the end of the walk when you reach Battle there will be a celebration of this Festival on Abbey Green outside Battle Abbey from 3 to 5pm which will include the Battle Band, Bar and Mad Jack’s Morris Dancers.

Considering the time: The Feast of Trumpets, also the Jewish New Year, is celebrated this year on the 25th and 26th September. It is an important time because it commemorates the end of the agricultural year before the harvest. Moreover the trumpet sound is an alarm indicating a call to repentance in preparation for the Lord God’s imminent return and judgement.

World’s Biggest Coffee: The Community Hall at Winchelsea beach will be hosting this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support which helps to raise money for people living with cancer. The event will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10.30 am to 12.30pm and you are invited to come along and have fun. A raffle, tombola and a ‘Guess the number of sweets in a jar’ competition will also be available.

Quiz Night: A Quiz Night on behalf of Rye & District Sea Cadets has been planned for next Saturday October 4th, 7pm at Rock Channel, Rye. The local Sea Cadets are a significant part of the mayoral parades and ceremonies in Winchelsea. Entry is £7.50 which includes light refreshments, with wine and soft drinks available.
