Bereavement: Members of the Literary Society may perhaps have already heard the sad news, recently published in the Daily Telegraph website, that Arthur Hollman died last week. Arthur was an active contributor to Winchelsea life, taking a keen interest in the Literary Society, Garden Society and the Winchelsea Singers. Dr Arthur Hollman died this August 13th from cancer aged 91. He was a cardiologist with an interest in plants and medicine and following retirement became the curator at the herb garden founded in 1550 in the City of London. In 1971 he saved the mmHg for blood pressure measurement when the then EEC (European Economic Community) aimed to replace it with the kilopascal. He once said that he would like to be remembered as the man who saved the millimetre of mercury. The funeral takes place today (Friday) at 2pm in Pett Parish Church and afterwards at Pett Village Hall. No flowers please but donations for St Michael’s Hospice can be sent through the Funeral Director Arthur C Towner Ltd, 2-4 Norman Road, St Leonards-On-Sea, TN37 6NH. There will also be a memorial event for Dr Holland in London later in the year.

Piano Concert: The summer series of afternoon concerts in St Thomas’ Church finishes tomorrow August 30th with a performance by pianist Natalie Molloy. Beginning at 3pm Natalie will be playing a selection of light classical music on the white grand piano at the back of the church. Come along and listen; entry is free and there will be a retiring collection. Following the concert tea and cakes will be on sale.

Rehearsals: Following the summer break the Winchelsea Singers are due to resume for rehearsals on the afternoon of Tuesday September 2nd in the New Hall. The performance in preparation is Offenbach’s operetta, Orpheus in the Underworld so make a note in your diary that this will be shown on November 7th and 8th.

Adult Courses: Tilling Green Community Centre in Rye is running 10 hour courses in the autumn term which may be of benefit to local residents. The first is First Aid which will be run over two days on October the 7th and 14th from 9.30am to 3pm. A certificate at the end of the course will be available. The second is Practical Gardening which will run on October 20th and 27th and then on November 3rd, 10th and 17th, from 1 to 3pm. Topics will include: pruning, propagation, vegetable growing, fruit growing, wildlife gardening and garden design. Your first 10 hour course is free and if you wish to participate in any other courses throughout the year a small charge will be made. Photos for Sale: Photos from the top of St Thomas’ Church tower are now on sale at the back of the church. These were taken in the spring when repairs were being made to the weather vane and church clock. The 360 degree bird’s eye view takes in the town and surrounding marshes and also includes some great close-ups of the gold letters and emblem of the weather vane. If your house features and you would like to purchase a photo tailored to produce a high level shot of your house please inform the Churchwardens, Sue Chetwood and John Rodley.

Winchelsea Beach Table Sale: In the Community Hall tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm and entrance cost is 40p which includes tea and biscuits. It you would like to order a table to sell your items you will need to ring 01797 224820 and tables are £6 each for the afternoon.

Winchelsea Beach Day Centre: A new Community Day Centre will be opening on Monday September 8th at the Community Hall. All older people are invited to come along and enjoy social activities, quizzes, a home cooked lunch, music and sing-alongs. It is very much an opportunity to have fun and make new friends and support services are also on offer with manicure, eye tests and benefit advice. If you live in Winchelsea Beach, Winchelsea, Pett Level, Icklesham, Rye Harbour, Rye or Icklesham you are most welcome and the meeting time is between 10.30am and 2.30pm every Monday. The cost for the day is £5 which includes refreshments and 2 course lunch and transport is available at £3 p.p. There is also the chance to help every Monday as a volunteer and 01797 225616 is the number to contact for details.
