Friends of the Ancient Monuments (FOAM, reg. charity) are having a Cellar Tour tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 am from Castle Street. The cost is £5 and you will need to wear comfortable shoes, bring a torch and the tour lasts about 90 minutes. You can book by email: [email protected] or phone 01797 222629 and the proceeds help to maintain and repair the Ancient Monuments of the town.

Winchelsea’s Secret Gardens is open tomorrow from 1 to 5.30pm for the National Gardens Scheme. The houses that have opened their gardens for visits are: Alards, Periteau House, Cleveland House, Rye View, The Armoury, Cleveland Place and Five Chimneys, plus the Back Lane allotments and total entry cost is £5 (children free). There will be teas served in the New Hall from 2 till 5pm with proceeds in aid of St Thomas’ Church.

The fortnightly Mobile Library will be stationed in Castle Street on Wednesday April 30th. As usual it is available for change of books from 1.40 to 2.10pm.

A Fun Quiz Night is set for Saturday May 3rd in the New Hall and doors open at 6 for a 6.30pm start. Teams of up to six people are invited and you will need to bring your own alcohol. There will be fun prizes for the winners plus a raffle. The tickets cost £9 p.p. which includes a ‘super sausage supper’ and funds raised will go towards the Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital. This annual event sells out very quickly and the number to ring is 01797 224045 to book your table.

On Saturday July 5th London’s Pegasus Choir will be returning to Winchelsea to present an evening of music and poetry written during the First World War and in response to it. In bringing the history closer to home the choir is inviting local residents to offer memories of their families’ connection to the war to be included in the programme. If you would like to have your family memories included in the printed programme or correspondence read during the course of the evening please email [email protected] for further details.

Last Wednesday during Holy Week Rev Peggy Heim reflected upon a meditative journey of events leading up to the cross and Jesus’ resurrection. A good number of friends and members from the Rye, Hastings and Bexhill Circuit were present at the Methodist Chapel for the service which was followed by Hot Cross buns and tea. To illustrate the talk Rev Heim had brought along some stunning posters that came from Turvey Abbey in Bedfordshire and were the artistic handiwork of the resident Benedictine nuns. The images which would have featured well on stained glass windows were a spectrum of colour and bold design that revealed the Lord God in action for our redemption.

The use of volunteer guides to show visitors around St Thomas’ Church has been very successful in past years. It is intended to have a roster of church guides in place again this year to cover as many weekends as possible from May to September. Those who volunteered in previous years are welcome to continue and for new volunteers please let the churchwardens know that you would be happy to take on this task and be willing to join the roster.

St Richard’s Church will be having its morning worship and communion on Sunday April 27th at 9.15am. Canon Whitehead will be leading the service and it is open to all.

This week on Wednesday April 30th the fortnightly Mobile Library will be in Sea Road. As usual it is available for change of books between 11.55 am and 12.30pm.

The next Table Sale for the year is Saturday May 3rd at 11am in the Community Hall. If you would like to book a table please contact the WBCA by phoning 01797 224820. Entrance cost is 40p which includes tea and biscuits and a good tombola will be at hand.
