Winchelsea

The Belgian Folk Concert is this evening (Friday) at 7pm in St Thomas’ Church. It features organ, accordion and traditional stringed and wind instruments and promises to be unusual and exciting. The tickets will be on sale at the door at £5 each and there will be a Cash Bar.

Morning worship at St Thomas’ Church will be led by Revd Teresa Munro on Sunday September 22nd. This service will begin at 10.30am.

Moving Pictures meets in the New Hall on Monday September 23rd at 7 for 7.30 pm. This month’s film showing is Song for Marion and entry is £5 at the door. The film, also known as Unfinished Song stars Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave and is a comedy tearjerker about a group of OAPs banding together to sing a repertoire of songs.

This year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning has been arranged for Friday September 27th from 10am to 12.30pm in the Lower Court Hall (by kind permission of the Mayor). As well as plenty of coffee to drink there will be delicious cakes, a Raffle, books and various stalls. Did William the Conqueror Land at Winchelsea (or at least Iham) and is Harold buried here? is the name of the talk given by Kathleen Tyson in St Thomas’ Church. Winchelsea Archaeological Society has organised this talk which poses some unanswered questions for Saturday September 28th at 3pm. The cost is £4 for non-members and is free for members & under 16s. Kathleen will be talking about her new translation and investigation of the manuscript Carmen de Hastingae Proelio (Song of the Battle of Hastings) which is the earliest record of the invasion.

The Harvest Supper this year will be during the evening of Saturday October 5th. St Thomas’ Primary School will, as usual host the Supper. More on this nearer the time.

Winchelsea Garden Society has arranged its last event for the year which is a visit to Wisley RHS Gardens on Wednesday October 16th. The bus will be leaving the Bus Stop by the Town Sign at 9am to travel to Wisley near Woking, Surrey and be back by 6pm. The tickets are £17 p.p. and are now available from Winchelsea Post Office. Wisley Gardens, known as the flagship garden of the RHS is always a popular destination because there is so much to see inside and out; plus a range of eating places; an excellent nursery and the best selection of horticultural books in the country in the shop. Autumn colour should be at its best. Wisley Gardens also accommodates a large modern glass house which has three climatic zones and is like walking into a jungle. The Garden Society has free access to the gardens as they are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society.

Winchelsea Beach

The rock and roll band Centre Page will be playing in the Community Hall tomorrow (Saturday) from 7.30 till 11.30 pm. There will be dancing and the theme is Hawaiian so plenty of grass skirts and sunglasses. Winchelsea Beach Community Association has organised the event and tickets cost £10 each which includes a fish and chip supper. This Sunday’s communion service on September 22nd will be led by Revd Teresa Munro. St Richard’s Church will be open for the service at 9.15am.

Cash Bingo, held every fortnight, will next be in the Community Hall on Wednesday September 25th. This popular event will be at the usual time of 7 for 7.30 pm and everybody should come along and give it a go.

The next Fellowship Lunch is coming soon on Friday September 27th in the Community Hall at 12 for 12.30 pm. With just one week to go booking is essential and the number to contact is 227168.
