The Summer Theatre Company is presenting the classic play, The Importance Of Being Earnest to commemorate the death of Ellen Terry. Actor Ellen Terry lived in Tower Cottage Winchelsea from 1896 to 1906 before moving to Smallhythe Place. The play will be presented in the Barn Theatre, Smallhythe Place, Tenterden on Friday August 2nd, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th at 7pm to 9 pm. As it is the first Saturday in the month there will be a Church Market tomorrow August 3rd from 10.30am to 12noon. On sale will be home-made produce, plants and books, plus coffee/tea and an opportunity to ‘catch up’ with friends. All proceeds from the Market will go towards church funds.

Winchelsea Archaeological Society has organised an Under Winchelsea Cellar Tour for August 3rd at 2pm from Castle Street. The cost is £5 per person and the contact address to book is: [email protected] with proceeds going towards archaeology in the town.

A Celebration of Song will be presented by the classical duo Melodia this Saturday August 3rd at 7pm in St Thomas’s Church. The musicians are Lucy Ashton (Royal College of Music) Anya Williams (Exeter Drama) and Ivora Rees from Winchelsea Singers who will be accompanying them. They will be singing some of Britain’s favourites which include songs from Carousel, Westside Story, Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, Last Night of the Proms and much more. Tickets are £10 from Winchelsea Post Office, Grammar School Records Rye or at the door and monies raised will be shared between the church and St Michael’s Hospice.

A date for your diary is the Winchelsea Summer Fete plus the fun dog show next Saturday August 10th. The fete will be held in the Cricket Field from 1pm to 4.30pm and a Grand Raffle, Pimm’s Bar, dog show, games, craft stalls and barbecue are amongst the entertainments on offer throughout the day. During the Fete the Wesley Chapel, opposite the Cricket Field, will be open to visitors from 2pm to 4.30pm.

I have been asked to mention the Exhibition of Photographs coming soon to St Mary’s Centre, Lion Street, Rye (near the church). The exhibition entitled Treasures of Romney Marsh the Fourteen Churches is given by Dr Douglas Moss and is a major collection of photographs that explore the detail and history which has shaped the churches. After seeing the photographs viewers may well be encouraged to visit the churches and discover the riches for themselves. The dates for the Exhibition begin on Monday 5th to Saturday 10th August from 10am to 4pm and it is free admission.

There will be a visit from the Mobile Library on Wednesday August 7th to Castle Street for books and information. This will be from 1.40pm to 2.10pm.

The Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare will be performed on Friday August 16th in the gardens of Cleveland House at 7 pm. It is Shakespeare’s shortest play and one of his most dramatic farces based on mistaken identity and word play. The tickets are £13.50 adults and £6 under 16s and the number to contact is 01797 224446 and monies raised will go towards Winchelsea Bonfire. At 6pm the garden is open for picnics and you will need to bring your own drinks, chairs and tables.

A by-election has been called in the Winchelsea Ward of Icklesham Parish to fill a casual vacancy. This was former councillor Comotto’s seat and he now plans to stand for re-election. Tuesday August 13th is the deadline date for the election to take place.

Winchelsea Beach

During the summer holiday Multi-Sport Activities will be taking place at Harbour Field, Dogs Hill Road, for ages eight and upwards. The dates are Tuesday August 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. It’s a free event and all about getting fit, keeping active, and having fun over the summer plus you can bring your friends along.

The Mobile Library will be making its fortnightly visit to Sea Road on Wednesday August 7th. This will be from 11.55am to 12.30pm.
