On Sunday 16th June Revd Teresa Munro will be leading the Sung Eucharist at 10.30 am in St Thomas’s Church. Church members are very pleased that Councillor Ben Chishick has been assisting in playing the organ, along with Marion Lovell, Peter Hatch and Iain Kerr until a permanent organist has been appointed.

The Rye & District U3A which is the University of the Third Age for mainly retired people will be meeting at the Rye Community Centre at 2 pm on Monday 17th June. An illustrated talk on, The History of the Houses of Parliament, will be given by Kevin Gordon.

Amour will be shown at Winchelsea Moving Pictures on Monday 17th June in the New Hall. It is a 2012 French drama which explores the question of what it means to love. Film maker Michael Haneke has approached this by showing the slow decline of Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) an elderly lady living in Paris and her husband (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who looks after Anne in her poor health. The entry cost is £5 p.p. on the door and the opening time is 7 for 7.30 pm.

At the Literary Society’s next meeting on Friday 21st June there will be a talk by Professor Gill Plain on British Literature in the 1940s. This will be at 7 for 7.30 pm in the Lower Court Hall with light refreshments available. Professor Plain, of the University of St Andrews is currently working on a literary history of the 1940s. Her interests include crime fiction, representations of war, British culture of the 1940s and popular British film, and her books include ‘Twentieth-Century Fiction: Gender, Sexuality and the Body’, ‘Ian Rankin’s Black and Blue: A Reader’s Guide’ and ‘John Mills and British Cinema: Masculinity, Identity and Nation’. This is a return visit to Winchelsea and on the last occasion Gill gave a talk on John Mills in 2007. The University of St Andrews which is where Prince William and Kate Middleton studied quite recently is known for its cultural mix of students, with over 30% from many different countries and 15% from North America.

A date for your diary is Saturday 6th July when there will be a Public Meeting at 11 am in the New Hall with Icklesham Parish ward councillors. The topic is: How Shall Winchelsea Commemorate the Great War? 2014 next year will be the centenary of the start of the Great War and there will be acts of commemoration in the UK and many other countries. Ten men from Winchelsea died in the Great War and two others are buried here. If you are able to attend the meeting please bring along your ideas and suggestions on how we should celebrate this important event.

Winchelsea Beach

St Richard’s Church will be holding Morning Worship on Sunday 16th June at 9.15 am. It will be Revd Teresa Munro from Playden Church who will be leading the service.

The fortnightly Bingo evening is this Wednesday 19th June at 7 for 7.30 pm with light refreshments. As always you are welcome to bring a friend and meet at the Community Hall.

Icklesham Parish Council is considering at its next meeting the possibility of funding summer holiday sports session for youngsters in Icklesham and Winchelsea Beach. This would mean a two hourly sports session per week for a four week trial period in each ward with the funding for two staff and equipment probably coming from the Rural Youth Project.
